Philadelphia's “Hammering” Hank Lundy rebounded from a
John Molino TKO loss for the NABO lightweight title, with a three day notice
decision blowout of Toronto’s Omri Lowther.
Entering last nite’s main event with Lowther on paper, it
looked like a good test for the man with the “Hammering Hank” sobriquet,
with Lowther arriving at 14-1, 10 KOs and Lundy at 18-1-1, 10 KOs.
Then the opening bell and all similarities went AWOL -
Lundry held the better hand round after round as he tossed 100-90 on two
cards and 98-92 on the other - my unofficial agreed to 98-92 on points and
8-2 under round by round method.
Lundy can now shed the "Hammering Hank" handle that
belongs to the late great champion Henry Armstrong with a non-stop punching
style - Armstrong kept no less than 180 ring appointments - among them such HOF names as Beau Jack, Fritzie Zivic, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sammy Angott,
Tippy Larkin and so many others.
But back to Lundy and last noche: Sheds the past banzai
style for a more diversified hit and not get hit in return approach - early
on he’s working from the port side - then after the halfway mark Hank goes
orthodox and is equally successful.
Lowther showed strong heart in finishing on his feet to
the wire in a losing effort.
Post Scripts: Hank Lundy (19-1-1, 10 KOs) ~ age 26 -
entered #7 under the WBO Lightweight rankings - tough and confident - the
“switch hitting” a plus as well. Strong field above him topped with Juan
Manuel Marquez , Michael Katsidis, Anthony Peterson, Juan Diaz translates to
reality time. Lundy albatross not big puncher - still, mucho entertaining.
Omri Lowther ( 18-2-1, 10 KOs) ~ age
26 - this assignment more shot in the dark than serious threat to Lundry -
the key to the Lundry fight becoming a happening was likely the brain trust
aware of Lundry arriving on short notice and the Molina KO loss in last
fight.
Commentator comments: Atlas-Tessitore slap-stick has gone
stale - the ESPN2 weekly fight offerings over due for a vacation. Hopefully
Brian Kenny studio insult is canned come the return.
