The ESPN WNF feature went as scripted, as unbeaten young
middleweight "Mean" Joe Greene grabbed the NABA club-fight strap
with a first round knockout of out gunned Daryl Salmon.
But for an opening fleeting seconds surprise, with Greene down
from a Salmon flurry, that not only caught the heavily
favored Greene flatfooted, but Tessie the tout and Teddy tutor
as well - still, an unhurt Greene quickly took charge of a
spirited stanza one start.
The power punching southpaw from the borough of Queens, NY would
then later in the round close the show with an eye-catching
combination that saw Salmon dropping face first to the canvas -
a knockout victim at 2:59 mark of one.
Post Scripts: Joe Greene (16-0, 12 by KO) ~ age 21 - serious
power in both hands, coupled with hint of good finishing skills.
Still, this career first professional trophy is far from rest of
the story - could use smoothing out in technique - clearly a
prospect but not as yet upper level contender.
Daryl Salmon (16-2, 4 by KO) ~ age 28 - a
tall southpaw with club fight credentials - short on power, and
for success it‘s a must he holds steady to the stick and move
game. In retrospect, the flash knockdown created false sense of
security - and set the table for "mean" Greene to show his
stuff.
………………………………..........................................................................
Cruiserweight eight round co-feature pitted veteran Louis
Azille (19-3-2, 15 KO) in with five day notice Francisco
Palacios (11-0, 5 KO) - original Azille foe former top cruiser
O’Neil Bell, of now missing person entity.
Azille enters heavily favored off better quality opponents - and
other than the opening stanza that saw a taller Palacios using
the ring with good movement it was all Azille in control over
five.
Azille applies the pressure with strong body punches mixed with
left hooks to the head - and during stanza five action it looked
like the pace has a slowed Palacios ready for plucking.
Then round six and Azille in search of the knockout - then,
just inside the opening minute, a stunning turnaround with
Palacios behind 4-1 in rounds, scoring with a monster
right-left-right combination combo.
Enters the books Palacio via KO at 55 seconds mark of stanza
six.
Post Scripts: Louis Azille ( 19-4-2, 15 KOs) ~ age 30 and rated
#13 under WBC charts needed the win. Early rounds suggested
opponent lacked clout but the Palacios right uppercut, desperate
or not, was picture perfect start of three punch combination
resulting in beginning of end for Azille. Loss drops Louis from
the cruiserweight picture.
Francisco Palacios ( 12-0, 6 KOs) ~ still
something of novice - has good size and movement - showed heart
during early rounds - then jumped at the opportunity to finish
in style. Needs fine tuning before stepping up the next rung.
Other prelims saw brothers Luis and Jose Hernandez scoring
exciting wins - older brother Luis (age 24) (7-0, 6 KOs)
returning from year 2000 car accident met undefeated Jesus Pabon
(age 21) (10-0, 7 KOs) in a thriller that saw both fighters down
in action stanza two.
Was Hernandez tossing bombs from opening bell but doing more
swishing than scoring - then stanza two finds target and Pabon
is down - recovers to floor Hernandez - then Pabon down and on
shaky legs. TKO 2:38 seconds of round.
………………………………..........................................................................
Featherweight shootout between age 20 Jose Hernandez ( 7-1, 2
KOs) and Noe Bolanos (11-2, 6KO) went the scheduled six round
distance with Hernandez in complete control from stanza one to
the finishing round six.
Official scoring in sync at Hernandez 60-53 - as was my
unofficial that saw Hernandez tossing six round shutout.
Closing comments: Card was throwback to yesterday club fights,
that without help from the magic lantern, needed good pairings
to put people in the seats. This one clearly qualified.
Now if there was an answer to the today referee situation, the
game would be back to where it once was in the glory days. The
players are there at each level of skill - doesn’t need third
man in ring vying for the camera.
