LOCK CATCHES 'SPEEDY' AT THE WIRE - TKO10

The ESPN WNF converted to a TNF when pre-empted by a college beizbol playoff  -  good news, late or not, a featherweight main event with seasoned veterans Cornelius Lock and Roger “Speedy” Gonzalez still in search for that pot of gold before the sun sets on both careers.

Opens with both seeking to counter  - then late in the stanza Lock is wobbled by Gonzalez right hand - then, just prior to the bell a careless Gonzalez is dropped by a Lock laser straight left hand off the right jab.

Lock grabs number two before Gonzalez gets back into the game - and it would then go one for me and one for you over rounds three and four before Speedy picks up the pace and claims stanzas five through eight.

The Lock corner trust whisper sweet nothings between eight and nine - things like “we’re losing, so better you pick it up” - and the taller southpaw slinging Lock turns aggressor in a big round nine - message delivered, there’s more than enough left in the proverbial tank.

The energized Lock quickly grabs control come the bell for final stanza ten - first knockdown a left hand-right hook to the head - then a wounded Gonzalez again dropped by power right hand body punch that finished a two-punch combination.

Time of knockout 1:27 mark of number ten.

Post Scripts:

  • Cornelius Lock (18-3-1, 11KO) ~ age 30-32? - good size and power at featherweight, but past history has him coming up short when entertaining quality. Likely a career club fighter to the bitter end. Strong heart, somewhat questionable chin construction.

  • Roger “Speedy” Gonzalez (27-2, 18 KO) ~ age 30 - Good technique but not the big puncher the rap sheet would imply. The move up to featherweight at this point hints the future is yesterday. Can still do well at small club venues.

  • Referee John Schorle - one of the very few good ones working the today left coast scene.

Closing thoughts : Maybe it’s just me … but … I would welcome the too good to be true news  had ESPN dropped its Wednesday night fights entirely. Last noche the latest insult for pro fight fans when it was pre-empted by a college beizbol elimination travesty.

Post scripts:

  • Question: can’t help wondering who the programming is reaching out to with that ludicrous Bert (Saccharine) Sugar segment - would help upgrading to Bert & Ernie on boxing, and sell it to Sesame Street.

  • Joey & Teddy - no cure for what ails. Atlas has the yesterday credentials but today in need of better script writing - much too drafty dialogue for television viewing. Tessitore could use an offer he cannot refuse as pitch man or as used car salesman.
