Transplanted Soviet Olympian lightweight Koba Gogoladze outscored past title
contender Lamar Murphy over ten repetitious rounds of fistic futility; a
classic case of southpaw versus orthodox.
Gogo clearly earned the nod but it was anything but pretty, used the quicker
hands with darting movement to frustrate the bigger hitter Murphy.
And so it went the full ten stanzas with the light-punching Soviet winning on
all cards with scores of 98-92, 97-93, 100-91. My unofficial agreed with 97-93
on points and 7-3 via round by round method.
Closing comments: Gogo ~ remains unbeaten at a now 15-0, 7 KO’s … serious
shortage of clout … the quick, unorthodox, herky-jerky style will only carry him
so far. Strictly ESPN level quality.
Murphy ~ just ain’t what he once was … past
solid lightweight no longer able to squeeze the trigger. Too many signs that
shout for him to drop the curtain on a very decent career. Is now at 29-8, 20
KO’s.
Ten round welterweight co-feature saw local favorite Jeff Fraza enjoying the
comforts of a hometown environment, and then played catch up ball with a little
help from his inept friend in role of "man in charge of the action" Joel
LaPlante.
Was Delgado early on with the better skills and much quicker hands and movement, thru six stanzas was all Delgado on my unofficial, but the notes also carried
a surgeon’s warning of "condition will be the factor."
And now it’s the "championship" rounds, and candle eight with Delgado showing
signs of fatigue. Enter LaPlante with a Delgado point deduction for low blow,
translates to a 10-8 round for the good guys.
Then a motivated Fraza, buoyed by the aide & abetting came out with both guns
smoking and drops Delgado with a double left-hook, and the stage was set for a
big stanza ten finale.
A drained Delgado was nothing more than a target at that point and a rejuvenated
Fraza poured it on from start to finish which came at 2:25 mark when corner
tossed in the proverbial towel.
Fraza goes to 16-2, 10 KO’s and Delgado drops to 10-4-1, 2 KO’s.
Post Scripts: Fraza trained by Micky Ward. Forte is condition and toughness,
punching power not top level. Best advice here is remain at home and work the
local club fight scene.
Delgado ~ No punching power to go with decent skills and
good speed early on. Needs better conditioning to offset a small caliber
offense.
