When first hearing the February 20 ESPN FNF was coming to us
from the Nova Southeastern campus in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, a few thoughts vied
for center stage in my already battered mind.
Was only a week ago, the ESPN venue was Sunrise, FL, no
more than a seven iron from Lauderdale - and the three favored sons in charge,
Santore- Kimmons- Ass-oblivious-imenios worked a version of the 3-stooges
comedy team of yesterday.
They collectively butchered the assignment to the extent
the Florida commission was expected to send them on a temporary leave of
absence. Wrong!
The only saving grace prior to last noche's ring action was
in seeing referee Santore missing in action - thus, the expectations was this
one would be a 2-team version of Moe & Larry with Curly taking leave.
Show opens with a 4-round Jr. Middleweight affair with
undefeated respective novices Erislandy Lara (3-0, 2 KOs) in with Keith Gross
(3-0, 1 KO) - and third hack in charge Telis -Ass- imenious - good news Lara
quickly takes Telis out of it by taking opponent Gross off the count at 1:09
mark of stanza one.
Next on tap is fan favorite Yuriorkis Gamboa, a past Cuban
Olympic gold medalist, now calling Miami home - a late pro start at a now age
27, and undefeated at 14 wins with 12 arriving via KO, in with age 34 Walter
Estrada at 35-9, 24 by KOs.
This one more Gamboa showcase than a contest - Estrada
arrived on three losses in last four kept appointments - the single win off
the carcass of a kid making pro debut.
Referee in charge Tommy “No Clue” Kimmons - makes a point
of reminding the fighters the fans in attendance came to watch the fight and
not him. Ugh!
But we get lucky when it goes according to form - opening
candle with both at close quarters; it’s a Gamboa left hook to the body
followed by a right hand to the chinny chin chin and at 35 seconds mark it’s
good nite sweetheart Estrada.
Not often that the connected Kimmons is left speechless in
one of his assignments.
The feature attraction a whole different story -
Ass-oblivious-imenios in reprieve of sorts gifted with the Breidis Prescott -
Humberto Toledo lightweight ten rounder. Prescott arrives undefeated
with job application at 20-0, 18 via knockout - Toledo rap sheet 34 wins, 5
losses, 2 draws and 20 wins via KO.
What the viewer gets is Prescott in charge from opening
bell - tall at 5’11” with healthy arsenal of text book deliveries that go with
combos from body to head. Not devastating puncher but decent power and good
defense.
Toledo, your standard club fighter - game enough but
lacking in skills - rushes forward behind wild arm punches without a
combination in sight - does manage a round three “inadvertent” that finds
Prescott cut alongside right eye - still, it’s a shutout entering stanza
seven.
Prescott finishes a flurry with a left hook that wobbles
Toledo - falls into the ropes - enter Ass-oblivious -imenios with the eight
count - and with it, our hack in charge goes into torrents of shouting at
Toledo for what is perceived assorted violations.
Stanza eight it’s a Toledo point deduction (along with
pointed finger) not to mention a glare of a devil impersonation - the guy goes
verbal non-stop until finally disqualifying Toledo for a legitimate violation
at 1:58 mark of final stanza ten.
The final straw was somewhat comical in that Telis baby
never saw the infraction - it took Prescott getting his attention - pointing
to a bloody shoulder with several bite marks.
Closing comments:
-
My unofficial Fighter of the Night award goes to Yuri
Gamboa - guess is with wise opponent selections the now age 27 quick-fisted
crowd pleaser could develop into serious contention at 126-130 memberships.
Not quite ready for the elite just yet.
-
Breidis Prescott at age 25 , tall at 5’11" another
prospect among the lightweight, junior welter field - could get a shot
before this year 2009 is history.
Post Scripts: Feelings here is if Telis Ass-imenios is not
soon brought under control somebody out there will be permanently damaged via
his severe shortcomings in responsibility department. Photos of this clown in
self-serving misdirected action would surely catch the eyes of an unprejudiced
award making jury.
