Nothing dull about the August 1, Saturday Showtime
Special from far out California territory - the good news on paper a twin
bill of 140 pound action.
Junior (The Hitter) Witter in with Devon Alexander
(the Great) for the WBC jr. welter strap, followed by Timothy
"Desert Storm" Bradley facing former lightweight champion Nate "Galaxxy
Warrior"
Campbell for the WBO bauble.
Curtain opens with Witter having the edge when
switching from starboard to portside - results in a temporary pause in
the younger southpaw Alexander expected modus operandi.
The veteran Englishman from Yorkshire, UK helped make
it interesting with the switch-hitting, coupled with sneak lead right
hands when working in orthodox fashion - but the Alexander constant
pressure would eventually slow Witter to a proverbial walk.
The kid (age 22) from St. Louis, MO wobbles Witter
during stanza four with a straight left hand - continues in command over
round five before Witter can claim numero six - but the handwriting on
the wall hinted the former European champ had lost interest.
Alexander the fresher of the two grabs number seven
and eight - and following a corner visit between eight and nine, with
veteran house hack Dr. Lou Moret threatening a near beaten Witter with a
ludicrous point deduction, The "Hitter" Witter opted to call it a night.
The cop out plea from Witter, a wounded left elbow -
enters books as Alexander via KO8.
Post Scripts: Devon (the Great) Alexander (19-0, 12
KO) ~ age 22 - quick and busy southpaw. Loads of confidence and
physically strong. Circle the name, worth the peek.
Junior (The Hitter) Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO) ~ age 35 -
first peek and easy to see what made him tough opponent when at prime
time - very elusive with unorthodox actions - not big puncher but quick
reaction time when squeezing the trigger. But today is yesterday news.
Was flat out of ammo with four candles to go in a losing effort.
...................................................................................
Bradley-Campbell followed in duel for the WBO crown - regardless of the
end result with Campbell victim of "inadvertent" head butt during stanza
three - it was the poor judgment of third hack in charge of the action
David Mendez converting a correct "no contest" call into a Bradley TKO3
win.
Matters not that Bradley was the busier of the two in
grabbing the opening two stanzas - until the nasty left orbit injury it
appeared Campbell was looking to slow the pace while waiting for the
opportunity to catch Bradley napping.
We'll never know if this one would have become a
Bradley rout - or a more competitive second half barn burner - the
unfortunate "meeting of the minds" resulted in Campbell opting to sit out
the rest of the story claiming his vision was impaired by the blood flow
from the cut over the damaged orbit.
The injury became the center of attraction - nobody
could deny it was result of the from the Bradley head butting - that is,
other than referee Mendez - his initial response was it was from a punch
that he saw - problem is the camera eye gave all TV viewers the head butt
finding the target.
The Bradley follow up flurry was more an out for
Mendez than the cause of the bleeding - Mendez, in defense, after seeing
the replay said both fighters were guilty of billy goat butting - and
insisted a punch to the eye was the cause.
Campbell repeatedly argued his case - said the call
was wrong and his complaint is in having a TKO on the record - when it
should have been a no decision.
The ongoing debate among both camps, left with the
call holding up although Campbell has the option to appeal to the
California commission.
In ring post- fight interviewer Jim Gray with Bradley
promoter Shaw, asked if he would give Campbell a return fight - the
responses repeatedly went "Yes, if the money is right."
How's that for the rest of the story? My feelings go
this way:
