Last noche’s ESPN FNF offering coughed up as
sad a “title” fight as it gets - USBA cruiserweight champion
Darnell “Ding-a-ling man” Wilson defending against amateur in
all categories B.J. Flores.
Wilson can punch with the left-hand - sinks
or swims with it when the target is propped up and ready to go
and the hook touches down perfectly to the sweet spot - most
times it’s same old, same old, slow and awkward entity on the
wrong side of the slope.
The challenger you ask? - needs no more than
a single look - B.J. Flores the name - touted by the kiddie
channel as silver medalist winner. Maybe B.J. can now audition
protective head gear and large mittens come first defense.
I found myself agreeing with the 116-112
score for Flores - but only because Wilson couldn’t get off a
dime in movement department - few times he landed a punch this
B.J. is looking to referee Steve Smoger for help - and then puts
it in reverse to safer location.
Problem as I see it - has nothing to do with
the cruiser division per se -but rather with the multiple
rankings that create couple solid pros sprinkled over four
separate sanctioning bodies at its worst.
This Flores guy couldn’t draw flies at that
ancient wall in Jerusalem were he to defend there - ESPN hack
Joe Tessitore lost any tad of credibility when referring to
Flores as too elusive and quick for the “Ding-a-ling” man to
find the mark with the one-punch power hook.
Scoring went Flores 118-110, 116-112, 115-113
- I agreed 8-4 under round by round method.
Post Scripts: B.J. Flores (21-0-1, 13 KO) ~
age 29 - technique similar to the amateur card of your choice -
should call it a career pronto - can only become a statistic if
continuing.
Darnell Wilson ( 22-6-3, 19 KO) ~ age 33 -
only under the today multiple system could this guy grab a strap
- and to his credit he did just that with a come from behind
one-punch crusher in last bout - but today is clearly yesterday
news and he should call it a career.
Referee Steve Smoger -
superb outing - let it flow for better or worse. Once known as
“body bag," he‘s turned the corner and far superior to most
working center stage today.
P.S. Atlas and Raul?
Prop finally found acceptable location for the pre-fight keys to
victory - this one held inside horse stable at Dover Downs, Delaware.
To the uninitiated I say trust me, the smell in there
qualifies.
