The ESPN Wednesday summer season beat continued, with
veteran Emanuel Augustus stealing the nite in a near
blanking of game, but out of his league, Marteze Logan
over 8- rounds of a one-sided affair.
It says here, that the late comedy man Rodney
Dangerfield, had Augustus in mind with the "getting no
respect" shouts - Emanuel assigned an underneath eight
rounder at a club fight level ESPN card is more than
insulting - it’s blasphemous.
The win has Augustus at a now shabby on paper 33-27-6,
17 KO’s, but in performance, he once again displayed
the copyrighted in and out of the book of sweet
science skills, that make him unique among the rest -
as simple as A-B-C, the reliable veteran can quickly
change gears to adjust to the situation at hand.
Didn’t take many stanzas to see his adversary, a
likable kid of 22, was in for a serious tutoring -
it’s Augustus playing it straight while claiming the
opening two candles that were competitive - then
stanza three with Augustus going full throttle.
Wasn’t until round four that the Emanuel slapstick
version surfaced, and not only confused the more
textbook in style Logan, but also young referee
Richard Gonzales who issued a warning that went "Don’t
do that stuff" - not sure what that was about, but as
a long fan of Emanuel I have heard that song before.
The Augustus style, a trick bag loaded with orthodox
combinations that go body to head, and coupled at
times with animated gyrations from outside punching
range that quickly convert to offensive
opportunities.
And his opponent Marteze Logan - entered batting under
.500 at 22-23-2, 5 KO’s - before making judgment,
realize the age 22 baby has already logged a now 48
kept appointments - on that note, where’s "Big
Brother" when you need him?
Has good size and physically strong at 140 - but in
need of tutoring - the kid never used the reach
advantage behind a jab - baffled, confused for the
most part, he waits until Augustus is busy on the
inside before playing counter puncher.
Says here, on all counts, this kid has been more than
poorly managed as to pairings, but also been fed to
the proverbial lions in opposition selections.
Scoring went Augustus 79-73, 79-73, 77-75 - this
unofficial had it Augustus 79-73 in points and 7-1
under round by round method.
Closing thoughts: Feelings are Emanuel Augustus will
not see that final shot at a title he wants so badly.
A victim of past hometown scoring and flat out
abominable white collar larceny - not to mention
ignorance of hack referees and ringside scorers
lacking a clue. Says here, at age 31, and cheated in
power punch department at the title contending level,
the card of a man should now convert from professional
boxer to one of tutor exceptional.
The Marteze Logan story
as well needs serious upgrading - the body is still
fresh at age 22 and while the won-loss is a mega
roadblock it could improve with style changes. Kid is
tough and durable but needs help in technique - who
better than an Emanuel Augustus in his life.
Main event honors went to junior bantamweights Jose
Navarro (24-2, 11) facing Vernie Torres (27-6, 15) - a
one-sided decision win for Navarro over a hand picked
opponent who showed nothing but survival abilities.
Navarro at age 24, and a southpaw with size showed
pretty good skills but not on par with a number of
competing small-bantams on the horizon. Torres tossed
some wild-n-wacky arm punches when trapped along the
ring strands - some landed, some didn’t and it
mattered not.
Scoring went Navarro 99-89, 99-90, 98-91. Try 9-1 in
rounds on my unofficial.
