ESPN FNF twin-bill bought itself a gimme in heavyweight
fringe contender Cristobal Arreola in with no-name target
without a prayer Joey Abell in the main event, and a
surprise in the semi-final with "hot prospect" Mike Dallas
facing Josesito Lopez for NABF minor light/welterweight
strap.
Arreola, no
dummy, aware this outing was a showcase opportunity to
regain lost prestige from the Vitali Klitschko
misadventure, and the Adamek decision loss, and the band
played on.
Opening
bell sees Abell the quicker out of the gate; jab, jab,
jab with nice movement backed by occasional left hand from
the southpaw side. Arreola the more aggressive, but with
some restraint figuring out his port-sider opponent.
Then, at
the two-minute mark of the stanza, Arreola finds the Abell
jaw with power right hand, sees Abell falling into the
ropes and in deep dung; follows with barrage from both
sides of the plate . Referee Tony Crebs quickly jumps in
and calls it no mas at the 2:18 mark of the round.
Post
Scripts: Arreola ( 30-2, 26 KOs), age 29, personal goal
is in becoming first ever Mexican heavyweight champion.
Possible, if somewhat unlikely, although, with four
sanctioning straps to choose from he does have proven
clout in them mittens. The key is age 29. Interesting
thoughts to ponder may be thinking back to prime Joe Louis
era; takes out challengers Tami Mauriello and “Two Ton”
Tony Galento, and there were others that were more
Arreola in style than serious contenders.
....................................................................................................................................
Underneath
co/feature sprung the surprise; undefeated Mike Dallas
enters at 17-0-1, 7 KOs and somewhere along the line
acquired the sobriquet “The Silent Assassin” facing his
toughest test in Josesito Lopez ( 28-3, 16 KOs).
Both
fighters came out willing as if in search of an early
night's work; Lopez becomes early victim of inadvertent
meeting of the minds and incurs cut left eye that would
leak from start to finish.
Dallas, the
more text book in style with quicker hands failed to work
more from the outside - and while Lopez was the injured
one, he kept it a brawl while proving the tougher of the
two.
Stanza tres
saw Dallas bothered by kidney-punch; referee Raul Caiz
Jr. ignored the beef by telling Dallas to stop the turning
that caused the illegal punch. More to Dallas dismay was
his getting no satisfaction when being whacked behind the
neck ala rabbit punch.
Finally,
candle seven... A Lopez flurry is followed by sizzling left
hook to the head that wobbles Dallas and Caiz Jr. quickly
calls it a night.
Rest of
story: Josesito Lopez ( 29-3, 17 KO), age 26, very game
and durable club fighter. Fits the label club fighter to
the letter and the new NABF l/welter title will be as good
as it gets.
Mike Dallas
( 17-1-1, 7 KOs), age 24 a big key if looking ahead for
positives. The prior two fights coming into this one saw
both opponents with collective rap sheets of 26 wins, 23
losses, 2 draws. Could use an Emanuel Augustus as tutor to
help on mechanics and how to relax while working off the
jab. As for questionable heart I have a superb cardiologist
I trust with my pace maker.
