The Saturday afternoon ESPN special from Poland helped fill some of the void while in wait for the HBO Calzaghe-Hopkins later in the night.

Up for grabs was the Tomasz Adamek - O'Neil Bell eliminator for the IBF Cruiserweight numero uno slot, and mandatory for its champion Steve “USS” Cunningham.

Adamek the local, enters at 34-1, 23 KO’s and Bell at 26-3-1, 24 KO’s - and on paper it looks like a competitive affair - then the bell with both looking to counter - late in round it’s Adamek with a counter left hook and Bell down but not in trouble.

Bell grabs stanzas two and three with both looking to counter - then stanza four with Bell slowing down, and limited to loading up with right hands - it then goes down hill  until he calls it no mas between rounds six and seven.

The surrender caught all by surprise since O'Neil never once appeared in distress - could be lack of conditioning found him out of fuel at halfway mark, and down 4-2 in rounds after six stanzas.

Post Scripts:

  • Adamek (34-1, 23 KOs) ~ age 31, single loss via decision at light heavy year ago to Chad Dawson. Failed to show needed clout to succeed at cruiserweight - effective offensive arsenal limited to jab-right hand.

  • Bell (26-3-1, 24 KOs) ~ age 34 and inactivity could well be the answer - or clue to why the lack of needed pressure. Clearly the bigger puncher but failed to use it on this night.

  • Referee Robert Byrd: Passing grades for a job well done.
