SURLEYMAN STOPS GAME JOSE MEDINA IN 8 CANDLES

By George Elsasser

Was my first peek at super welters Nurham Surleymanoglu and Jose Medina ... was worth the look ... a tasty pugilistic appetizer to the Lacy-Grant entree to put it mildly.

Surleyman proved one tough turkey with all the trimmings ... former Turkey Olympic medalist is a complete package ... the jab, right hand and hook. Goes to body and head with combinations ... only debit I see is on the birth certificate ... a dozen pro fights at age 32 places the guy on a fast track to better company than he's yet been in with.

And that other thing ... undefeated now after 12 bouts with but five starches ... in a jr. middle division that's loaded ... skilled or not, no room for many mistakes if facing the cream of the crop.

And Jose Medina ... enters at 9-1 with eight whacks ... very strong and aggressive ... everything delivered with bad intentions ... dangerous early but needs work on discipline ... torrid pace had him ready to be dressed by the Turk once them closing rounds of 7-8 arrived.

Post script:
On paper this one was made to order .... Surleyman the complete boxer and sturdy with good chin ... Medina a walk-in banger and tough as nails ... the end came at 2:59 seconds of number eight ... was pretty much a shutout come stoppage time. Surleyman not major league title timber but could well take home a strap or two from them ESPN2 minor league franchises.
