Entering his IBF Light
Middleweight title eliminator encounter against
Deandre Latimore at Choctaw Gaming Center in Durant,
Oklahoma, Sechew Powell had revenge on his mind. He
also needed a victory to propel himself back into the
Light Middleweight title picture. He achieved both
goals with a hard fought victory in front of a
national television audience on ESPN's Friday Night
Fights.
Just like their previous
encounter in June 2008 that was fought on even terms
until Latimore prevailed with a surprising 7-round
stoppage, their rematch was also a very close, hard
fought contest. However, on this night Latimore
could not find the late round magic that carried him
to victory in their first meeting..
Brooklyn, New York's Sechew
"Iron Horse" Powell (25-2 with 15 KOs) used his
effective counter punching strategy against Las Vegas
resident Deandre "The Bull" Latimore, who entered
with a record of 20-2 and 16 KOs. Latimore was the
more aggressive fighter, always trying to get off
first by setting a fast pace with his attacking
style.
Both fighters landed effective
combinations throughout the opening six rounds, with
not much separating them on the scorecards. However,
in the second half of the fight Powell seemed to
build a commanding lead over Latimore by landing the
more effective punches as the fight seemed to sway
towards the Brooklynite.
Sensing he was losing control of
the fight, Latimore picked up his attack the last two
rounds and was more effective in landing his
combinations. It appeared that his late rounds
efforts had been too little too late, and the judges
agreed with scores of 116-112 and 117-111 in favor of
Powell. The dissenting judge scored it a 114-114
draw, which appeared to be very favorable towards
Latimore.
With the majority decision
victory over his previous conqueror, Sechew Powell
not only avenged his TKO loss but also re-established himself as a viable contender in the
talented Light Middleweight division.
