EURO NEWS CORNER (12-28-2007)

German heavyweight Timo Hoffmann made a grand stand and won a lot of glory in defeat against WBO I/C ruler Aleksander Dimitrenko November 17. However, Bild Zeitung reveals today that Hoffmann, signed to Sauerland Event but with contract expiring at the end of the year, have tested positive to a forbidden substance. According to Bild Hoffmann's A-test was positive to a kind of steroid. Hoffmann, judging from other cases, could be facing a year long suspension.

Police and tax officials in Hamburg, Germany, have raided Arena Box Promotion's office, gym and also promoter Ahmer Oener´s home, reports Bild Zeitung. Officially there are no comments to what brought about the police activity. Bild writes that an anonymous source tipped the police of taxes not paid in time and attempts to evade tax. Oener even had to empty his pockets and according to Bild  even the computer of Oener's ten-year old step daughter was seized. Turkish heavy Sinan Samil Sam also figures in the investigation. Oener calls the razzia "pure harassment."

Frenchman Brahim Asloum won the a world title in his third attempt, moving down to light fly, when he outscored Argentinean Juan Carlos Reveco this past weekend in Le Cannet. Asloum thus became the first Frenchman to win both an Olympic Gold and a World title in the pros. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sent his congratulations to Asloum. It was an important win for French boxing after several (Mormeck, M´Baye, Asloum twice, etc.) setbacks. According to l´Equipe, Reveco was forced to shed an amazing eleven kilos (about 24 lbs) in the six weeks leading up to the fight.
 

EURO NEWS CORNER (12-7-2007)
Susianna Kentikian retained the WBA flyweight title and added the vacant WIBF belt to her collection with a hard fought unanimous decision over Nadia Hokmi from France. It was scored 97-95, 96-94 and 97-94. Hokmi protested but was overrun in the first half of the fight by the aggressive champion. She did better in the later rounds and had Kentikian in trouble in the last but it wasn't enough. 
British veteran Lee Swaby survived a first round knockdown and became the first to take hard punching German Sebastian Kober the distance in 12 fights. After six it was scored 59-54 twice and 59-55 for Kober.
 

EURO NEWS CORNER (12-04-2007)
Spotlight Boxing promotes tonight - Dec 4 - in Solden, Austria and on Friday, Dec 7, in Hamburg. The Hamburg bill is topped by female fly Susianna Kentikian, who face Nadia Hockmi in a WIBF and WBA fight. WBO I/C middle champ Sebastian Zbik defends the title against Samir dos Santos Barbosa, heavyweight Sebastian Kober face experienced Brit Lee Swaby, Argentinian puncher Marcos Rene Maidana is in against Manuel Garnica. Colombian cruiser Santander Silgado, 10-0 10 KO´s, makes his debut for Spotlight.

Purse bids for EBU middle champ Sebastian Sylvester´s mandatory defence against WBA # 1 challenger Javier Castillejo will not take place until January 28, 2008. This means Finn Amin Asikainen, EBU # 1, will be kept waiting. Sylvester will make a voluntary defence of the title January 26 in Berlin against Francois Bastient in a supporting bout to the IBF heavyweight eliminator between Eddie Chambers and Alexander Povetkin.

EURO NEWS CORNER (11-28-2007)
Henry Akinwande and Steve Herelius will clash for the vacant EU heavyweight title. EuroProm in France promotes the fight, with date and site to be announced. 
German heavy Timo Hoffmann's contract with Sauerland Event expires at the end of the year. Timo's grandstand against Aleksander Dimitrenko didn't go unnoticed and he is likely to continue his career with a different promoter in Germany.

Union Boxing Team will stage another big show December 15 in Donetsk, Ukraine. The main bouts shape up as follows: Vyacheslav Senchenko vs Riad Menasria for the EE-EU and WBA I/C welterweight titles, Andrei Kudriatsev vs Aram Ramazyan for the vacant EE-EU lightweight title, Yuri Voronin vs Oleg Yefimovich for the WBO Int'l. featherweight title, Vladimir Kravets vs Kanat Kartenbaev for the EE-EU jr welter title and finally in a non-title eight-rounder super middle Stas Kashtanov takes on Laurent Goury. 

DIMITRENKO STOPS HOFFMAN
WBO I/C heavy champ Aleksander Dimitrenko stopped German challenger Timo Hoffmann in the twelfth and final round of a brutal, exciting and controversial fight that headlined this Universum promotion.

EURO NEWS CORNER - AT THE SCALES IN MAGDEBURG, GERMANY...
November 16, Magdeburg, Germany
German veteran Timo "The Body" Hoffmann came in at 117.5 kilos/259 lbs. for tomorrow's showdown in Magdeburg against WBO I/C champ Aleksander Dimitrenko, somewhat smaller at 115 kilos/253.5 lbs. It was a friendly weigh in without even a stare down.
Grigorz Drozd and Laudelino Jose Barros both came in at 89.5 kilos/197.25 lbs. for their WBO A-P title fight.
 

EURO NEWS CORNER (11-15-2007)
It´s on: Graciano "Rocky" Rocchigiani vs Dariusz "Tiger" Michalczewski III will happen at the TUI Arena in Hannover, on  May 24, 2008. Bild Zeitung broke the story today and it's headline news. The 43-year old "Rocky" is fresh out of jail while "Tiger" have already been in a health spa/diet clinic to shed some weight. The fight is made at 84 kg/185 lbs. Michalczewski won their first fight back in 1996 under dubious circumstances but stopped the somewhat faded Rocchigiani in 2000 in Hannover. Both fights were huge ticket sellers. There is one hurdle left writes Bild: both have to pass extensive medical checkups.  

EURO NEWS CORNER (11-02-2007)
Sauerland Event won purse bids earlier today for IBF cruiser champ Steve Cunningham´s defence against Marco Huck. The winning bid was for $425,000 USD as compared to $405, 000 USD from Don King. Date and site will be announced soon.

EURO NEWS CORNER (10-28-2007) ...
New Danish promoter Robert Larsen's first show last night in Gladsaxe can hardly be called a success boxing wise. In the main event Robert Osiobe had a very soft touch in Peter Balasz, who basically was just looking for a place to fall down on. Balasz came in as a very late sub for Laszlo Bognar.

Multiple super middleweight champ Natascha Ragosina is looking to add a fifth belt to her collection when she headlines SES' promotion in Dessau, December 15. Ragosina holds the WIBF, WBA, GBU and WIBA titles and will now try for the WBC crown as well.

EURO NEWS CORNER (10-24-2007)
Comebacking Swedish heavy Attila Levin is off DiBella Entertainment´s show in Hollywood, Florida, October 30, for promotional reasons. On the show are Cuban stars Yuriorkis Gamboa and Yan Barthelemy. Gamboa, at feather, will face Brazilian Adailton de Jesus, who´s #11 with the WBA. 

EURO NEWS CORNER (10-22-2007)
Randy Griffin, (24-1-3, 12 KOs), seemed to be do everything right Saturday night against WBA  middleweight champion Felix Sturm, (28-2-1, 12 KOs). He was aggressive, worked the full three minutes of every round and landed with effective punches in most of the rounds. Fair enough, he had problems with Sturm's tight defense, walked into a fair share of sharp counters but all in all looked like a winner at the end but got a controversial draw.  

EURO NEWS CORNER: BERLIN RESULTS AND MORE (10-20-2007)
Cuban heavyweight Juan Carlos Gomez won the WBC International title and beat Oliver McCall the second time they fought as well in the headliner of Arena Box Promotion's show at the Estrel Congress Center.
Gomez used his slick southpaw moves almost to perfection and at times did a number on McCall, who admitted that opponents like Gomez were all wrong for him. "He´s slick, awkward, moves well. It was a risky fight, I knew that all along."

EURO NEWS CORNER (10-17-2007)...
It's official: WBO light heavy champ Zsolt Erdei will face Panamanian Tito Mendoza November 24 in Dresden. Co-headlining is Firat Arslan vs Virgil Hill for the "real" WBA cruiser title.

EURO NEWS CORNER (10-14-2007)...
Juan Carlos Gomez was a judge for a beauty contest while the reigning WBC International heavy champ Oliver McCall went to church; that's how the two main eventers for Arena´s big show in Berlin October 19 spent their weekend.

EURO NEWS CORNER... (10-12-2007)
German marketing company Sportfive and Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko have parted ways after six years of collaboration. From now on all aspects of marketing, including the sale of their personality rights and the rights to their boxing matches, will be managed by Klitschko's Management Group GmbH. The Klitschko brothers´ fights will still be promoted by K 2.

EURO NEWS CORNER (10-09-2007)
Ukrainian heavy Vladimir Virchis has relinquished the EBU title. Stablemate and fellow-Ukrainian Aleksander Dimitrenko remains the mandatory challenger. Dimitrenko faces German veteran Timo Hoffmann November 17 in Magdeburg - a fight that is for now "only" for the WBO I/C title.

Hennessy Sports have now set Carl Froch's defence of the British super middleweight Froch is hot on the trail of the winner of Kessler vs Calzaghe that takes place November 3 in Cardiff.

EURO NEWS CORNER (10-07-2007)
Panamanian light heavyweight Tito Mendoza has been in full training to face WBA ruler Stipe Drews in Germany this fall but Drews reportedly is injured. laprensa.com writes that Tito will now be the opponent for WBO champion Zsolt Erdei, who defends the title November 24 in Dresden. Mendoza is not rated by the WBO but that is a problem that is normally easily solved.

Dutch middleweight Raymond Joval has his first fight at home since 2003 when he faces  experienced Frenchman Alban Mothie October 8 in Amsterdam. Don Diego Poeder, knocked out last time out, will have another go as he takes on Ukrainian Yaroslav Zarovotny in a heavyweight fight.

WBA middleweight challenger Randy Griffin has arrived in Germany for final preparations for the fight against champ Felix Sturm October 20 in Halle / Westfalen. Griffin will be training at the Arena gym in Hamburg and will spar with Alpaslan Aguzum and Kofi Jantuah. Aguzum is in full training for a showdown with WBC International ruler Domenico Spada October 19 in Berlin.

Ex-WBO 126 lb challenger Samuel Kebede returned to action but looked lucky to get the nod over tough Frenchman Mihaita Mutu, who even scored a flash knockdown that was ruled a slip.

EURO NEWS CORNER (9-27-2007)
WBC International middle champ Mahir "Lion" Oral broke his hand in sparring and cannot defend the title as planned against Italian Domenico Spada October 19 in Berlin. Oral has agreed to relinquish the title to give stablemate Alpaslan Aguzum, who made his debut at 160 September 21 in Luebeck, the chance to contest for the vacant belt against Spada October 19. There will be 12 fights in all on the bill topped by Oliver McCall vs Juan Carlos Gomez.

EURO NEWS CORNER (9-25-2007)
Spanish website espabox.com writes that the rematch between ex-WBA middleweight champs Mariano Carrera and Javier Castillejo will go ahead November 13 in Germany and not October 20 on the Sturm vs Griffin show in Halle / Westfalen.
