EURO NEWS CORNER (03-9-2008)...
Cuban cruiser, based in Berlin and promoted by Sauerland
Event, Yoan Pablo Hernandez faces ex-WBC champ Wayne Braithwaite March 29 in
Kiel in the chief support to Abraham vs Ayala. Hernandez has scored several
quick wins of late, over decent guys as well, but has a tendency to fade if the
fight drags out and Braithwaite will surely expose that - if it is enough to win
is a different matter though.
EURO NEWS CORNER (03-3-2008)...
Arena Box Promotion won today's purse bids at the EBU office
in Rome for the right to stage the fight for the vacant EBU heavyweight title
between Sinan Samil Sam and Matt Skelton with an offer for 147,250 EUR. Sports
Network put in 143 500 EUR. Date and site is to be announced within 14 days.
Future heavyweight star Odlanier Solis will now face Cisse
Salif March 14 in Munich after Bruce Seldon fell out due to legal problems.
Headlining the show is ex-WBC super middleweight champ Markus Beyer.
BARASHIAN STOPS ULRICH...
Ukrainian light
heavy Yuri Barashian won the EBU title
with an eighth round stoppage of Thomas Ulrich, the
defending champion. Ulrich was hurt by a body shot
late in fifth, floored three times in the seventh from
the very same southpaw left hooks to the liver area.
Early in the eighth Barashian floored Ulrich again with that
left hook and it was waved over at 0.56 as Thomas got up.
EURO NEWS CORNER (02-23-2008)
Dmitri Sartison, 21-0, steps in for
Jurgen Brahmer and fight Pablo Daniel Zamora Nieves tomorrow night in Halle an
der Saale. As for why Brahmer pulled out, German media have been informed by
Universum that it is because of illness in the family. The show still shapes up
interestingly with the European debut of Colombian puncher Santander Silgado,
11-0 (11) as a possible highlight on the undercard. EBU light heavy champ Thomas
Ulrich is the favorite against Yuri Barashian but the Ukrainian southpaw is in
with a good chance against the sometimes erratic German.
CHAGAEV vs KRASNIQ?...
When Universum's heavyweight veteran Luan Krasniqi, 30-3-1, pulled out of a
possible EBU title fight against Matt Skelton there was obviously a plan behind
it and in today's edition of Bild Zeitung it's all explained. Universum have
applied for another voluntary defence for WBA champ Ruslan Chagaev - against
Krasniqi. The fight - if the WBA gives permission for it - should take place in
May at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, home turf for Luan, who resides in nearby
Rottweil. It´s a big chance for the 36-year old veteran and for sure his last;
he's been inactive since losing a WBO eliminator to Tony Thompson. Chagaev´s
mandatory challenger is Nikolai Valuev.
EURO NEWS CORNER (02-17-2008)
Turkish heavy Sinan Samil Sam outscored
one Mazur Ali over six this past weekend in Istanbul and is now gearing up to
fight for the vacant EBU title against Matt Skelton. Sam got the chance after
German Luan Krasniqi pulled out. Luan was first to have taken on Aleksander
Dimitrenko, who priced himself out, then Skelton stepped in and now Krasniqi is
out, Skelton remains and Sam is in. Why Krasniqi pulled out remains an open
question.
