Caught the Thursday "late show" - Versus channel
version of boxing after dark - that featured undefeated featherweights
Charles Huerta and Derrick Wilson in the main event.
Huerta of Paramount, California entered the Hot Water
Resort & Casino at Los Angeles the crowd favorite, while sporting
unblemished rap sheet of 11-0, 7 KO's - his opponent from FT. Myers,
Florida, Derrick Wilson arrived unbeaten at 4-0-1, 1 KO.
Then the opening bell, and we see Wilson out of the
gate like a fighter jet on a strafing mission - but Huerta avoids being a
target as he shows better skills when answering with eye-catching
counters.
Then it comes - Huerta misses during a flurry on the
inside and it's Wilson finding the mark with a counter left hook flush on
the target, and Huerta is on the canvas without a clue to what had
dropped him there.
Referee Raul Caiz SR. begins a count but once seeing
Huerta confused and completely disoriented, calls it no mas at 50 seconds
mark of stanza one.
Post Scripts: Until the Wilson bomb scored perfectly
Huerta was more than holding his own - clearly outscoring Wilson - but
the Floridian showed good chin.
Huerta as well, handled the incoming until the lethal
blind sided left hook shot him down.
Both Wilson at age 20 and Huerta at age 22 are where
they are at as six round fighters - Wilson short in technique department
and vulnerable to counters with a one-dimensional style of waging war -
Huerta as well in need of upgrading skills - puts punches together in
combinations, now must work more behind the jab.
Rest of story not as yet written.

Lightweight prelim saw good looking portside slinger
Luis Ramos improving to 12-0, 7 KO's with a dazzling offensive display
that finally wore down age 36 Sandro Marcos that arrived off three
consecutive debits, along with work application of 27-19-2, 23 KO's.
Marcos is down twice in opening candle - recovers to
make numero dos close, and then has the edge in action stanza three -
from that point on it is all Ramos with the quicker hands.
Come round six a Ramos right hook drops the curtain at
59 seconds mark.
Closing comments: Luis Ramos age 21, a southpaw with
solid skills and above par punching power looks like prospect potential
off my first peek - circle the name for future reference.
Post Scripts: Must have few words for a scheduled
heavyweight 4-rounder that opened the show - Herman Binek, age 35 at 6-3
and 240 Lbs facing Yojan Banks, age 33 at 6' 3" and 260 Lbs.
Suggestion here is both should pack it in before the
mission impossible ends with both making the obit pages.
Binek goes to 8-1, 6 KO's while Banks drops to 2-3-2,
1 KO - hopefully them Binek by KO scalps have long been re-interned.
Less said the better about the Versus telecasting
crew.
