TSZYU-MITCHELL: FLIP A COIN

By Tom Dickey

One thing that I have noticed listening to a lot experts discuss the upcoming Kostya Tszyu-Sharmba Mitchell fight is that opinions are pretty well split on who will win. Each contingent has their good points on why they think Tszyu or Mitchell will win. I have noticed that the consensus is pretty split on this fight.

Most people that believe Mitchell will win, say that Tszyu's layoff will have too big of an effect. Some say that he has the speed to beat Kostya, and others say that Kostya should have taken a tune-up fight before stepping in the ring with a fighter of Mitchell's caliber. Those who say that Tszyu will win most often point to his power and will. They also say that Tszyu will rough up Mitchell, and that Sharmba's chin has sometimes been questionable. Others say that Kostya has dealt well with speedy, crafty boxers, and point to the Zab Judah fight. There have  been questions about how Mitchell's knee will hold up if Kostya starts roughing him around again, like in their first fight. What I have taken from what I have heard, read, and what I believe, is that this fight is a toss up.

So I figured the best way to look at this fight was to break it down:

SHARMBA MITCHELL

STRENGTHS

WEAKNESSES

Good boxing skills/ability

Chin

Good experience/defense

Past injuries

Good hand and foot speed

Tends to not move his head enough

Smart and well conditioned

Tends to get lazy in the middle of fights

KOSTYA TSZYU

STRENGTHS

WEAKNESSES

Good power

Ring rust

Smart boxer

Has had trouble with crafty fighters

Underrated speed

Has been known to rough-house too much, to where it has cost him points - (Was deducted a point for throwing Mitchell down in their first fight)

 Determination and experience

Aggressiveness

Well Mitchell wins that 6-4, but I'll stick with my prediction of Tszyu winning by a close decision. But, I would not be surprised if Mitchell wins. Either way it's a coin flip, and should be fun on November 6th.
