GIOVANNI SEGURA: JUST THE HARD PUNCHER THE FLYWEIGHT DIVISION IS LOOKING FOR

By Tom Dickie

In the flyweight division, there are not a lot of household names. Ask the casual Boxing fan about the division, and they would probably ask back whether Michael Carbajal is still fighting there. Nonetheless, the hardcore Boxing fans know that there are of a number of good young exciting fighters in this division. Giovanni Segura could be the next name added to this list.

For most of you out there who don't live in the Southern California, you're probably wondering, Who is that? Segura is quickly rising as one of the most exciting flyweights in the Southern California area, and has even garnered the recognition of Top Rank, who recently signed him. He is a kid who has quickly gained recognition and a following in the Southern California area. Segura is 7-0-1, but already draws a good following for his hard punching and exciting aggressive style.

Segura is only 21 years old, and lives in Bell, California. He trains in the legendary Azteca Boxing Club in Bell, California. The gym has garnered a reputation as being one of the toughest and most competitive gyms in the Southern California area. Segura has come up fighting on club shows in the San Gabriel Valley area, and has excited fight fans whenever he has fought. He has fought mainly in the San Gabriel Valley in Norwalk and Whittier, but now with Top Rank is fighting all over, after only eight pro fights.

Segura in his first pro bout, won a unanimous decision against Jesus Valadez in Del Mar, California. His career then took a little sidestep, as he gained a draw in his second fight against Benjamin Garcia. It was from this point that Segura's career took off. He got an immediate rematch against Garcia, and made the most of it, knocking Garcia out in the first round. After this fight, Segura would go and win his next four fights in a row, all by 1st round stoppage. This quickly earned the attention of Top Rank, who signed Giovanni, and put him on a card in Las Vegas in his last fight.

Top Rank gave him a test right out of the shoot, putting Giovanni in with a fellow undefeated fighter. The fighter was Felipe Rivas, who was 4-0. Knowing this was his first big chance, Segura made the most of it. Segura showed he could go the distance, as he easily defeated Rivas by a shutout unanimous decision, and knocking Rivas down one time en route to his victory. With the win, Segura won the California State Flyweight title, and opened some eyes in the Boxing world.

Top Rank has no plans to make it easy on Giovanni. Segura will be fighting on May 6th at the Ft. McDowell casino in Fountain Hills, Arizona. The card is promoted by Top Rank, and will be televised by Telefutura. Giovanni hopes to catch a break, and get his match televised. Segura will be fighting a very tough veteran in Roberto "Famosito" Gomez. Gomez is 14-15-1 with 11 KOs. But, has a lot of experience, a good punch, and a good chin. So, the fight will be another step up for the young Segura, who will look to turn more heads on May 6th.

So, if any of you get a chance to see the card in Arizona, or see it on TV, check out Giovanni, because he just might be the next big flyweight star.
