Andre Ward of Oakland, California became the first American Boxing Gold Medalist since 1996. Ward
out-pointed Magomed Aripgadjiev of Belarus 20-13 in the gold medal match.
DIRRELL PULLS OFF UPSET, ADVANCES TO SEMIS...
Middleweight Andre Dirrell of Flint, Michigan pulled off a big upset on
Wednesday, knocking off Cuban Yordani Despaigne Herrera on points. In what
looked to be a chess match in the first two rounds, Herrera took an early 5-3
lead after two rounds.
WARD ADVANCES TO SEMI-FINALS...
Andre Ward of Oakland,
California became the first American fighter to advance to the semi-finals in
Athens. The Light Heavyweight defeated Russian Evgeny Makarenko 23-16 on points.
TWO MORE AMERICANS FALL IN ATHENS...
Most experts felt that Ward and Dirrell were the United State's two best hopes
for a medal at this year's Athens games. Now Ward and Dirrell are the only
U.S. hopes for a medal at this year's Olympics.
WARDS ADVANCES AGAIN, SILER AND

The U.S. Olympic boxing team sent its fourth fighter into the
quarterfinals on Saturday. Middleweight Andre Dirrell of Flint, Michigan
defeated Nabil Kassel of Algeria by a referee stoppage.

The Americans are off to a 6-1 start, not bad for a team that was not getting
much respect going into the Olympics. The U.S. hopes to keep the momentum

Not many people were giving the U.S. Olympic Boxing team much of a chance to
medal at this year's Athens Olympics. Most experts seem to be in agreement
