Thompson Boxing Promotions "Path to Glory" card on Friday night was about as exciting of a card as you will get. Five bouts that were all entertaining bouts. In the main event, Miguel Angel Huerta won the WBO Intercontinental Lightweight title with a dramatic 5th round KO of Marco Angel Perez. The fight capped an exciting night of Boxing at the Omega Products International in Corona, California.

The main event pitted two fighters on a roll, riding three fight winning streaks. Huerta of Mexico City, had come off upsetting highly touted Rolando Reyes, and contender Allen Vester in his last two fights. The fight was a technical fight in the first two rounds. Perez's most consistent punch of the fight was his straight right hand, while Huerta was focusing on the body attack.

The first round was a feeling out round, with Perez landing a few right hands to the face, and Huerta landing some body shots. In round two, Perez started strong, landing a couple of solid overhand rights. The fighters started mixing it up a little more, with Perez doing a little better during their exchanges. Perez started round three in similar fashion by landing his straight right, but Huerta came back in the middle of the round with some good body shots. It was Huerta's best round of the fight at that point, but very close.

Huerta had a good round in round four. Huerta was going to the body more consistently, with Perez occasionally countering with a straight right. Huerta started to go to the head a little bit as the round wore on, he landed a good straight left, which would be a sign of things to come. Huerta's body punching got him into trouble late in the round as he was called for a low blow, and docked a point by referee Jerry Cantu. The shot was borderline, but the point deducted probably turned it into an even round.

Huerta came out blazing in round five, swinging the momentum of the fight. He went to the body with a fervor, which would lead to Perez leaving his head open. Finally over half way into the round, Huerta landed a picture perfect overhand left to the chin of Perez, which sent Perez down immediately. Perez made an attempt to beat the count, but referee Jerry Cantu counted him out. Huerta looked like he may have been losing the fight when he pulled off the knockout. With the win Huerta  improved to 22-6-1 with 15 KOs, while Perez of Las Vegas, fell to 20-6. A solid fight which ended in sensational fashion. Huerta won the WBO Intercontinental Lightweight title, and continues his hot streak. BRC had the fight in favor of Perez 38-37 at the time of the knockout.

The semi-main event of the "Path to Glory" card may have been the best fight of the night. It was an 8 round Super featherweight fight between Ulises Pena of San Fernando, California and Juan Carlos Martinez of Los Angeles. This was supposed to be an easy fight for Pena, as Martinez came in with a record of 11-22 compared to 10-4 for Pena.

This fight was an all out action packed war from the first bell to the end. Both fighters never let up, and it seemed as if they would tire at some point. They just kept throwing punch after punch until the end. In the first round, both fighters centered their attacks on the body. In round two, Martinez was very busy continuing to the body. Martinez seemed slightly more active, but slightly less accurate. In round three Martinez continued to go straight ahead at Pena.

Throughout the fight the underdog Martinez took the fight right to Pena, hoping to maybe overwhelm Pena with his sheer volume of punches. Pena seemed to be a little more accurate, and threw shorter less wide punches than Martinez. In the fourth round Pena started landing a solid short right hand consistently when Martinez came inside. But, Martinez took the punches and got inside and launched away with lefts and rights to the body. It looked as if Martinez was tiring from his volume of punches, but he never would let up.

Round five saw Martinez continuing to the body with Pena starting to go to the head more. In round six, Martinez started to force the fight inside, and this played to his advantage. Martinez continued landing solid hooks to the body. Pena started hooking successfully to the head in this round. The final two rounds were more of the same, with Martinez going to the body and Pena to the head. They finished the fight with a flurry, and the final bell rang as the fighters got a nice applause from the crowd. Pena won a majority decision in a very close fight. The crowd booed a little after hearing the final decision, thinking the underdog had done enough to win.

There were three other exciting bouts on the "Path to Glory" card. Francisco Javier Garcia of Sylmar, California upset Eduardo Martinez of Rubidoux, California in a four round junior welterweight bout. Garcia came out early and established a very good left jab, which would keep Martinez off him early on. In round two, Garcia knocked down Martinez with a beautiful left hook to the jaw. Martinez beat the count, and looked dazed the rest of the round. Martinez showed heart as he beat the count and survived the round on wobbly legs.

Martinez started to figure out Garcia in the final round, but it was a little late. Martinez who had trouble dealing with Garcia's jab, finally started to counter it with lefts. Both fighters capped the final round with a slugfest exchange which resulted in both fighters tagging the other with good shots. Garcia would win the fight by split decision and improve to 5-3-1, and Martinez fell to 5-2.

Also on the card Erivan Conciencao of Brazil defeated Mauricio Grajeda of Calexico, California by unanimous decision in a 4 round junior middleweight battle. Conciencao was making his pro debut against Grajeda who was 1-4-1. Grajeda had upset on his mind as he took the fight right to Conciencao, but Conciencao was a little more accurate. Conciencao was able to land his straight left hand on a consistent basis throughout the fight. This was an exciting fight with both fighters landing good shots, but Conciencao doing it with a little more accuracy.

The opening bout of the evening had two fighters making their pro debuts in a featherweight battle. Joshia Gonzales of Ventura, California dominated Ian Queen of San Diego to score a unanimous decision victory. Queen brought a martial arts background into his pro Boxing debut, but it didn't seem to help him much. He started well landing a right hand to the temple of Gonzales, which appeared to stun Gonzales temporarily. Gonzales bounced back quickly with a great overhand right which snapped Queen's head back. Gonzales took over the rest of the fight, and in round 2 knocked Queen down with a great straight right. Gonzales's best punch of the night was his straight right, which he used to dominate and score a shutout victory. Queen was game and competitive, but showed little defense to Gonzales's assault.

This capped off a very exciting night of Boxing at the Omega Products International in Corona, California. Five exciting fights, including a dramatic main event. This card was promoted by Thompson promotions and their next card will be held on October 29th from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California.

Some faces in the crowd included IBF Lightweight champion and Hall of Fame cutman Chuck Bodak. Both men predicted easy victories for Bernard Hopkins on Saturday. Diaz also said that his September 24th title defense was cancelled, but is very close to signing a deal to fight Diego Corrales in December.
