WHAT'S NEXT FOR HOPKINS AND DE LA HOYA? By Tom Dickey |

Usually after a fight one of the first questions
they are asked is what's next for them. After
Saturday's epic middleweight showdown, one might
wonder what's next for Bernard Hopkins after his
victory, and what's next for Oscar after his first
ever knockout loss. There are still a number of
options for both fighters. The options for Hopkins could be to just get his title defense streak to 20, which would be an amazing accomplishment. His win over De La Hoya already puts him in the legendary status category, but since he indicated that he wants another big fight or two, let's look at his best options. If Hopkins could pick one fighter that he could fight it would probably be Roy Jones Jr. His loss to Jones over 10 years ago still eats at Bernard, and he would love to avenge it. The problem with this idea is that Jones has showed no eagerness to fight Hopkins, and seems to want to fight again at heavyweight. Hopkins and Jones were close to signing up for a rematch a few years ago, but that was nixed over money issues. Situations are different now, as Jones is coming off a loss, and Hopkins is coming off a huge win. But, Jones has showed little interest, and seems to want to fight with the heavyweights. Another option could be Antonio Tarver. Tarver is the type of guy who would fight Bernard, and it appears that Roy Jones has no interest in a third fight with Tarver. Tarver's Light Heavyweight division is thin, and his best option for a big fight is to either move up to heavyweight or fight Hopkins. The weight issue might be a problem in making this fight, and money issues could possibly get in the way. You got two guys who just knocked out Roy Jones and Oscar De La Hoya, and both are going to believe that they should be making top dollar. Even if egos are put aside there is still a weight issue. There is a 15 pound weight difference in the two weight classes. They could possibly meet in the middle at 168, but that might be a lot of weight for Hopkins, considering he walks around as a middleweight. This is a fight that could be a good option for Bernard.
Another option could be a rematch with Felix
Trinidad. Another fight with Trinidad could net
Hopkins a lot of money, but he would have nothing to
gain as a fighter, since he already soundly beat
Trinidad once. The options are kind of thin for
Hopkins as far as getting another mega fight goes.
There are also possibilities with Felix Sturm or
prospect Jermain Taylor, but these are not
opportunities of the big money kind. Likely, Hopkins's
best options are either Tarver, Jones, or Trinidad.
