ESPN AND MAIN EVENTS COMBINE ON A ONE YEAR, 12 FIGHTS DEAL

By Tom Dickey

ESPN and Main Events announced a one year deal that will bring some of the hottest young fighters to the forefront. The fighters that would possibly fight
on the network would be Juan Diaz, Rocky Juarez, and Kermit Cintron. Two ESPN representatives along with Main Events CEO Kathy Duva, and matchmaker Carl Moretti talked to the press and discussed the deal on Wednesday.

The deal will include 12 fights over the next year, and will include pay per view matches. ESPN representatives stated they wanted to expand their pay per view, which right now includes College Football and Basketball. The twelve fights would include two pay per view boxing events in 2005, seven Friday Night Fights cards, and three special date cards starting on November 5th. It was also announced that ESPN2 will start up its Friday Night Fights series again beginning in January. Main Events will promote seven of these cards in 2005, along with the pay per views and the special date cards.

It was also announced that the same studio and ringside crew would be back. During the Main Events promoted fights Jeremy Schaap will join the crew as a reporter. The prices for the pay per views were not announced, but ESPN said they would be consistent with the current market. Carl Moretti announced that the first card will be on November 4th, it will be one of the special dates cards, as the FNF series will not return to January.

The November 4th card will be from the SBC Center in San Antonio, Texas. The main event for this debut card will be the first defense of WBA Lightweight champion Juan Diaz against mandatory Julian Lorcy. The undercard will feature newly signed Main Events fighter Jorge Lacierva against Armando Guerrero.

Moretti also announced the second special dates card will take place on December 3rd from Atlantic City. Heavyweight Dominick Guinn will fight on the undercard, and the main event will feature Rocky Juarez battling former world champion Guty Espadas. Moretti also stated that Kermit Cintron would probably be on a February card, as he is recovering from hand surgery. The deal is a one year deal as ESPN dives back into Boxing, and will bring back it's Friday
Night Fights series in January.
