$500,000 AND 'THE
CONTENDER' TITLE ON THE LINE TUESDAY NIGHT IN LOS
ANGELES
By Tom Dickey
The wait is finally over as the
last two remaining fighters will square for 'The
Contender' Season Two championship on Tuesday night
from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It will be two
veterans squaring off for the biggest payday of their
careers when Steve Forbes meets Grady Brewer in the 10
round main event.
For Steve Forbes, it has been a
career filled with accomplishments, including a world
title. In December of 2000 Forbes won the IBF junior
lightweight title from John 'The Beast from the East'
Brown, and in August of 2002 Forbes lost the belt on
the scales when he faced David Santos. Steve has
fought at higher weights since, but has not been able
to win any more titles. He came up short at 135 lbs.,
losing to Carlos Hernandez, (October 2003), and lost
in another shot to Thailand's Yodsanan '3-K Battery'
Nanthachai. Through his long career, Forbes has never
fought for half-a-million dollars like he will on
Tuesday night. Forbes was hoping that joining the
Contender might re-ignite his career, and it's done
just that. He can kick it up a notch with another win
on Tuesday.
Forbes entered the show as one of
the favorites to win, but unlike the other favorites
(Michael Clark, Ebo Elder) he survived the first round
and two additional fights and will now be fighting for
the title. The show was a bit of a risk for Forbes,
because he had fought most of his career at
lightweight, and had just begun fighting at 140. He
would now have to fight at 147, against bigger guys,
some of whom had came down in weight from 154, like
his semi-final opponent Cornelius Bundrage.
Another risky factor for Forbes was
the show's 5 round format. Forbes is not a hard
puncher, more of a slick boxer who is used to going
more rounds. He had to change his style a bit, and be
more offensive minded. Forbes has usually been a slow
starter, and probably lost the first round in all of
his fights on the show. But, as Forbes put it, he was
able to dig deep and find ways to win the fight late.
Now he will be fighting for the biggest purse of his
career against a very hungry fighter in Grady Brewer,
who has also came up the hard way. Forbes has defeated
Freddy Curiel, Nick Acevedo, and Cornelius Bundrage to
get to this point.
Grady Brewer has lived the
journeyman's lifestyle as a boxer; he is respected by
all because he has taken on just about everybody,
(including Jermain Taylor, Jose Luis Zertuche, and
Marco Antonio Rubio), usually on short notice. He
handed Anthony Thompson his first loss, after 'The
Messenger' had won 15 straight.
Brewer is now showing that he is
a skilled fighter, and will also be fighting for the
biggest purse of his career. Brewer has come up the
hard way; and he knew the show was probably his last
chance at accomplishing something big, and he has made
the most of it. Brewer has probably looked the most
impressive on the show. He won fairly easily over Mike
Stewart and Vinroy Barrett, and survived a first round
knockdown to defeat Norberto Bravo to get to the
final. Forbes and Bravo will be back in their
environment on Tuesday night as the final will be ten
rounds.
There will be three other bouts on
this Contender finale featuring fighters from the
show. In the third place battle Norberto Bravo will
take on Cornelius Bundrage in an eight round bout.
Bravo defeated Rudy Cisneros, Gary Balletto, and lost
to Brewer. Bundrage defeated Michael Clark, Walter
Wright, and lost to Forbes. In two separate six round
bouts, Walter Wright will take on Vinroy Barrett, and
Michael Clark will battle Freddy Curiel. Wright
defeated Andre Eason before losing a very tight
decision to Bundrage. Barrett lost a decision to
Brewer. Curiel lost a spirited decision to Forbes,
while Clark lost to Bundrage on the first episode of
the show. Tickets are still available at the Staples
Center box office. The first bout is scheduled for
5:00 pm Pacific time.
