CASTILLO AND LACY BREAK DOWN OPPONENTS WITH TKOs

By Tom Dickey, ringside

Jose Luis Castillo retained his status as the top lightweight in the world with a 10th round TKO over Julio Diaz. Diaz had trouble seeing after suffering two bad cuts. Diaz's cut over his left eye was caused by a punch, and the cut on his right eye which caused severe swelling was from a head butt. After the fight Diaz said that he could not see out of his left eye from the 4th round on. Castillo again looked like a bull, by the way he stalked Diaz and forced the action inside. Diaz was at his best when he was able to box from the outside, but Castillo was able to turn the fight into his fight.

After the fourth round it became evident that Diaz was having trouble with his vision as he began to take a lot more shots. Castillo constantly pushed the action, especially when he got inside. Diaz was very courageous, but Castillo just was too much for him. Castillo moves on to May fight with Diego Corrales, which would totally settle who the King of the lightweight division is. Castillo's biggest strength is his ability to impose his will and size on fighters, and he was successful tonight. If he can be ready in 2 months, he should be very tough for Corrales. Throughout this fight with Diaz, Castillo forced the fight in close and was able to do good damage as was evidenced by Diaz's face. At times Castillo pushed the envelope as he hit during breaks, but never had points taken away.

Castillo simply kept going straight at Diaz until he eventually broke him down. In the 10th round, Castillo dropped Diaz with a left hook. Diaz beat the count, and Castillo jumped right back on him until he dropped Diaz with another hook. As Diaz was on a knee, referee Richard Steele examined him and decided to call off the fight. Castillo once again looks impressive, and will be a daunting task for Diego Corrales, who hasn't fought since August.

Jeff Lacy retained his IBF super middleweight title over the game Rubin Williams by 7th round TKO. Williams showed he was no pushover, like some thought that he might be, but eventually Lacy's power got to him. Williams was able to land a solid amount of punches throughout the fight, but Lacy's chin showed no signs of give. Lacy also dished out his fair share of punishment, but Williams withstood a lot of hard punches until he finally succumbed in round seven. Early in the fight, "Left Hook" Lacy's best punch was his right hand as it was able to find a home on Williams's face. Williams was also able to land his right hand, but Lacy withstood it. Finally in the seventh round Lacy's onslaught got to Williams as Lacy jumped on Williams from the onset. As Lacy got Williams on the ropes he wailed away with left and right hooks until referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight.

Lacy gets a tough win and moves on to another mandatory. Lacy made a point of calling out Joe Calzaghe after the fight, saying that he wants to fight Calzaghe by the end of the year. Lacy's same flaws were exposed in this fight, and that flaw is that he got hit a lot. But, with that being said Lacy also that he has a sturdy chin.

Lacy also showed in this fight his greatest strength and that is his power, the type of power that can change a fight quickly. For anyone in the 168 pound division that wishes to fight Lacy, they are going to have to able to take a shot, because Lacy can deliver one.
