JOE CALZAGHE: SIMPLY SPARKLING

I like many other Boxing fans sat and watched Showtime's broadcast of the Jeff Lacy-Joe Calzaghe fight on Saturday night, and like many was shocked. Not so much shocked that Calzaghe won, but just how easily he won. I felt going in that Calzaghe had a chance, but I'm not going to lie to you and say that I thought Calzaghe would win. I thought Lacy's power would probably overwhelm Calzaghe, and that Lacy had looked unstoppable in a recent stretch. I have always felt the only way to beat Lacy would be to effectively box him, but I just didn't feel Calzaghe could do this for twelve rounds. He not only did it for twelve rounds, but he did it with relative ease.

Going into the fight I thought that Calzaghe would have his moments, but at some point Lacy would catch him and finish him. But, as I was watching the fight this theory went out the window. I could see from the end of round three, that Lacy was in trouble, and that he would not be able to eventually catch him like I had originally thought. Calzaghe just looked that damn good. As the fight was drawing to a close, and the result was more and more obvious, I started to think to myself that this was one of the better performances that I had seen in a long time. Just to make sure that I wasn't caught in the moment, I watched the fight again when it was replayed on Monday.

Guess what? I wasn't caught up in the moment, Calzaghe was just that good. I guess I was guilty of underestimating Calzaghe, and falling onto the Lacy  bandwagon like a lot of American Boxing fans. But, Calzaghe made a believer out of me. Remember Lacy getting the Ring magazine cover, and dominating all his TV fights. Lacy being built as the next big thing, yet did you see how Calzaghe was able to defeat this star so easily. I was trying to figure out the last time I saw such a dominating performance in such a big fight. The closest thing that I could come up with in recent memory was Winky Wright's domination of Felix Trinidad.

Though Wright's performance was tremendous, as Tito couldn't touch him it still was not like Calzaghe's. Wright didn't assault Trinidad like Calzaghe did Lacy. Both fighters made their victories seem easy, but Calzaghe's was more vicious. There was no people during Wright's victory debating on whether the fight should have been stopped, and Trinidad didn't look like Lacy did after his loss.

Jeff Lacy will be back, he wasn't just all hype, he's a good young fighter that wasn't ready for this fight. He should not in no way be written off, he just wasn't ready for the Joe Calzaghe we saw on Saturday night. He wasn't ready for Calzaghe's foot or hand speed, and was relying too much on his power.

Hopefully Joe Calzaghe will get his just due, and he appears to so far be getting that. Just remember back to before this fight, and how dominating Lacy looked. I know this is harder to imagine now after seeing Saturday night's fight. But, try to remember back. Now go back to Saturday night, and remember how Calzaghe made him look, and what Calzaghe did to his face and his eye. Remember seeing Calzaghe attack Lacy with three and four shots and get out before Lacy could get off one. Remember how easily Calzaghe avoided Lacy's big bombs, and how Lacy flailed away at Calzaghe in trying to land one of these bombs. Remember how easily Calzaghe did what he wanted. Recollecting all this from Saturday's clash could lead one to only one conclusion, that Joe Calzaghe was
simply sparkling.
