BOJORQUEZ STOPS CRUZ IN 7

Carlos Bojorquez put an end to a close fight in the seventh round as he dropped Jose Luis Cruz twice
en route to a seventh round TKO in a scheduled 10 round junior middleweight bout. The fight, held in front of a sold-out crowd, was the main event on Thompson Promotions "Path to Glory" card held at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California.

The fight was very competitive going into the seventh round. Cruz tried to stay on the outside and box, which worked for awhile until Bojorquez was able to cut off the ring and corner Cruz and eventually finish him.  Cruz came out in the opening round and tried to establish his game plan for the whole fight, to box from the outside and keep the charging Bojorquez off of him. Cruz executed that well until the end of the round when Bojorquez flurried to cap the round. Cruz probably still did enough to take the round. Bojorquez started to change his attack in the second round as he went to the body consistently. The strategy worked as he frustrated Cruz, who kept yelling that Bojorquez was throwing low blows.

Cruz got back to boxing from the outside in round three, dipping his head in and out, and was able to land the occasional potshot. However, Bojorquez did more in the round, as he was able to land solid jabs and body shots. Round four was another good round for Bojorquez. Carlos started putting his punches together well and landing crisp combinations. Bojorquez landed some solid hooks and right crosses. Cruz started to come back in round five, as he got back to staying away from Bojorquez and fighting from the outside. Bojorquez did land a hard overhand right midway in the round, but Cruz out boxed Bojorquez for the rest of the round.

Round six was one of Cruz's better rounds, as he stayed away and boxed. Nevertheless, Bojorquez started to figure Cruz out, and was able to cut off the ring and corner Cruz. When Bojorquez did, Cruz seemed flustered and usually took a beating. Bojorquez closed the round strong, and it would be a sign of things to come in the seventh round. There were a lot of times during the fight that Cruz sometimes got a little too cute, and the seventh round was one of them. Cruz allowed Bojorquez to corner him again in round seven and this time he payed for it. Bojorquez landed a huge overhand right which staggered Cruz, followed by a barrage of punches, which sent Cruz stumbling down. Cruz beat the count, but didn't seem to have his senses back, and Bojorquez jumped on him.

Bojorquez landed another solid right hand, which sent Cruz crashing down for good. The referee immediately called off the fight as Cruz lay motionless on his back. Cruz was fine, though he looked out for a few seconds. Bojorquez wins by TKO at 46 seconds of round seven. Bojorquez improves to 24-7-6 with 20 KOs. There were four other fights on the "Heat Wave" card.

Undefeated prospect Timothy Ray Bradley of Palm Springs went into uncharted waters as he fought his first six round fight against veteran Justo Almanzan. Bradley dropped Almanzon twice en route to a unanimous decision victory. Almanzon was game as usual, but couldn't hang with the younger, stronger and faster Bradley. It looked like a fight in which Bradley wanted to display his all around skills, as well as go the distance of six rounds. There were instances when it seemed as if he could have finished off Almanzon but didn't. Early on Bradley displayed a good jab and solid bodywork. Bradley dropped Almanzon in the first round with a right cross to the body.

Bradley would drop Almanzon again in round three with an overhand right which sent Almanzon stumbling backwards onto his behind. It was at this point, where Bradley seemed to toy with Almanzon, at times showboating. Bradley got a little more assertive in the final round as he pounded away at the body with hooks, but to Almanzon's credit, he was able to survive the fight. Bradley won by scores of 60-52, and 59-53 twice. Bradley improves to 6-0 with the win, while Almanzon falls to 14-43-5.

In a fight marred by roughhousing, Ruben Juarez defeated Freudis Rojas by a fourth round TKO in a lightweight bout. Rojas was disqualified for excessive grabbing behind the head, and the fight was stopped at 1:37 of the final round. Juarez of Oxnard, California improves to 3-0, while Rojas of Cuba falls to 0-2.

In a scheduled 4 round super featherweight bout Guillermo Ruiz TKO’d Tommy Perez in a very entertaining fight. Ruiz dropped Perez in the opening round with a right uppercut to the body. The rest of the fight was controlled by seesaw action with both fighters at times appearing stunned. Conditioning was a factor, as Perez seemed winded by the third round. In the third round, Ruiz landed a solid left hook to the body, which dropped Perez, and Perez's corner jumped in to halt the fight. Ruiz wins by TKO at 1:11 of the third round. The Palm Springs native improves to 2-0 with 2 KOs, while Perez of Las Vegas falls to 0-1.

In a scheduled four round bantamweight bout, Daniel Quevedo made quick work of Thomas Hensley with a 1st round TKO. Body shots was the diet again as Quevedo cornered Hensley late in the round and pounded away with body shots till Hensley went down and the referee stopped the fight. Quevedo of Hanford, California wins in his pro debut, while Hensley of Barstow, California falls to 0-4.
