Juan Diaz (
33-0, 17 KO) ~ age 24 - a credit to the game in and out of the
ring - no trash talking - began this one a tad on the reckless
side which is not the norm. Settled down once going to the jab
as table setter for them power barrages to head and body. The
WBC standard bearer is another Diaz - David Diaz who was in
attendance. Pretty much made to order for the Texan with the
matching shooting irons, and good defense when in need.
“I thought Julio was going to box me more
but he came to fight. That surprised me. I was able to lure him into
my kind of fight, a toe to toe action fight. Julio had decent power which
also surprised me. .."
Julio “Kidd” Diaz’ (34-4, 25 KO’s) bark turned out to be
bigger than his bite on Saturday night, where in Chicago, he
finally got to fight WBA/WBO Champ Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz
(33-0, 17 KO’s). It was a RARE unifying title bout that would
see the winner possessing three of the four major
recognized title belts. So, congratulations to Juan Diaz of
Houston Texas, who after two years of being hounded by Julio
Diaz to fight, took him on and fought aggressively for eight
straight rounds until Julio’s corner called it a night. It
would be Juan Diaz by TKO victory over the man who talked so
much but was unable to convincingly win a single round.

Mexican pride and tradition, the words
are timeless yet vastly becoming mainstream dialect in the
world of boxing. There was a time in the recent past when
promoters viewed Mexican fighters in the smaller weight
classes as “draws” on the west coast; those times have
changed. Since Fernando Vargas’s reception in Chicago back
in 2005 promoter Don King in his emanate wisdom has been
pioneering the resurgence of “big time” boxing in the
“Windy City.” Don’t get my wrong, Chicago is certainly a
“fight town” by Midwest standards with companies like 8
Count and Hitz Boxing putting on shows all over the
Chicago land area. When I say “Big-time” I’m referring to
icons such as Vargas and Morales who usually fight in
Vegas or California coming to Chicago to fight. When I say
big time I’m talking about the HBO cameras, Larry Merchant
and the boys coming into what should be a Cubs depressed
town on October 13th.
DIAZ vs DIAZ: JUST WHAT THE
LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION NEEDS...
by Tom Dickey
Boxing's famed lightweight division will experience a
resurgence this weekend. Its two best fighters will square off in a unification
bout for nearly all the weight class' major belts. It's just
what the division needed, as it is very thin right now, thanks in part to
defections to higher weight classes.
JULIO 'THE KID' DIAZ: "I'M CONFIDENT
I'LL BE STANDING IN THE END"
“In the kick-off press conference a few weeks ago, Juan Diaz
said that ‘The only way I am going to lose this fight is if you
carry my out in a stretcher,’ and Julio Diaz said ‘Well, I
guess I have to bring a stretcher.’ That quote alone says
this fight is going to be fantastic. These fighters are
going to leave it all out there.”
