JUAN DIAZ, A 'BABY' BULL NO MORE! ... by Mike Indri/RBF
Under the caring and watchful eye of seasoned head trainer/manager Willie Savannah, Diaz's boxing career had been brought along at a much more guarded and slower pace than the Houston native would have liked, and the 135pounder has endured all the skeptics who've wondered aloud about the young fighter's quality of opposition, his supposed lack of punching power and his ability to rise to the occasion against the elite fighters in the division...

DIAZ STOCK SOARS - HALTS FREITAS IN EIGHT - UNIFIES TITLES... by George Elsasser
Rest of the story: The Boxing After Dark cast of three just doesn’t cut it - and with Lennox the lummox and Maxie the boy hysterian with the commentary it more resembles the ESPN2 studio carnival than yesterday’s HBO offerings. Maxie boy hysterian quickly self destructs any credibility on all counts - the coup de grace is the inside ring post fite interviewing. Last night it’s repeated reminders (in Max’s alleged mind) that even if claiming all four straps, the real champion is Joel Casamayor. The "Baby Bull" no sooner adds a second belt and is told by this soon to be successor to Larry Merchant - and isn’t that a laugher- he’s not the "real" champion unless he beats the Cuban.

"ACELINO FREITAS QUITS AGAINST JUAN DIAZ''... by Frank Gonzalez, Jr.
Congratulations to WBA Lightweight Champion, Juan “The Baby Bull” Diaz, who improved his unbeaten record to 32-0, with 16 KO’s and added the WBO Title to his currency after unmanning former Champion, Acelino “Popo” Freitas (38-2, 32 KO’s), who quit on his stool after eight rounds up at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut Saturday night.

CAN ACELINO OUT BOX THE "BULL?... by Jim Amato
This will be by far the best fighter young Diaz has met up to this point in his career. Freitas will bring speed, power and experience into the ring with him. Diaz has youth and strength on his side but will it be enough? Acelino showed in his loss to Corrales that his spirit can be broken. Please remember though he was boxing well until he began to tire around the eighth round.

JUAN DIAZ: ''THEY ARE GONNA HAVE TO CARRY ME OUT ON A STRETCHER..." by John Martinez
Moments ago I spoke with WBA lightweight champ Juan Diaz to get his thoughts on this Saturday’s unification showdown with fellow belt holder, WBO titlist Acelino “ Popo” Freitas. The championship fight will take place at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, CT and will air live, solely on HBO’s BOXING AFTER DARK at 10 PM ET/PT. The young champion vowed that he’s ready and willing to prove himself to the world.

DIAZ-FREITAS UNIFIER - CIRCLE IT ON THE CALENDAR... by George Elsasser
For this veteran fight watcher, what stamped Diaz as special was the July 17, 2004 title win for the WBA bauble against a skilled and durable Lavka Sim - as in prior televised fights this one saw Diaz adding defensive skills coupled with the aggressive style that earned him the "Baby Bull" sobriquet.
No flair, no Hollywood, a throwback fighter of years gone by - the skills have grown with the physical maturity - outing after outing something new would surface - went from brawler in style to a more search and destroy approach, and today at age 23 he’s displayed solid defense, while continuing in a fan friendly power punching approach.
