Miguel Cotto took care of business tonight in
Puerto Rico, scoring an 8th round TKO over Gianluca
Branco. Cotto showed great poise and an excellent variety of
punches in defending his WBO belt for the fourth time.
Cotto simply seemed to be the stronger and harder
puncher between the two, although Branco showed plenty of
professionalism along the way in keeping things interesting.
Cotto's best work came as he pinned his foe to the ropes and
fired off punishing shots to the head and body, which eventually
took their toll and had Branco retiring to his corner holding
his right shoulder and wincing in pain.
Cotto now seems lined up for a June 10th
meeting against fast talking, sharp shooting Paulie Malignaggi.
Cotto's methodical attack mixed with Malignaggi's flashy style
and quick hands should make for an extremely fascinating
contrast in styles and possibly a great fight as well.
