JUDAH AND MORE: SOMETIMES I GET IT RIGHT

By Frank Costarelli Jr.

Sometimes my views and opinions are wrong, sometimes they are right and more often than not, there is no right or wrong. I'm not a boxing insider, I don't have an agenda or an allegiance and I prefer it that way.  It gives me the freedom to write on topics I feel passionate about, to be objective and to be a bit more critical of the subject matter.

Sometimes I come down hard on fighters I write about. I hold them to a higher standard. I compare them to their peers, past and present. There are times I just do not agree with all the accolades heaped upon them. Other times, I just do not like the actions they display in or out of the ring. There is never a time I do not respect their profession and the hard work they put in to achieve their goals. I do not compare their achievements in boxing to those of mere mortals like myself.

I don't take myself too seriously, my hope is the reader finds the topic I write about entertaining and the article provides food for thought and discussion. I try to be unbiased, thoughtful and informed when evaluating a topic; the opinion I express is mine only. I always respect the right of the reader to disagree with me. I have been blasted in emails by some readers. I'm flattered they have taken the time to read one of my articles and provide feedback. I welcome all feedback, negative or positive, as long as it is presented in a respectful manner, leave out the expletives.

In the past several weeks I presented my views and opinions on two separate topics and I seemed to hit the nail right on the head with both.

In an article I had written titled; "The World According To Zab," I stated Zab Judah was a good fighter that was overrated and a big mouth trash talker. After Saturday evening, I don't think Zab is on anyone's pound for pound best list except his father's.  Of course some can still be blinded by the hardware in Zab's mouth and by the way, what is that about!

A hard working, earnest and light punching fighter named Carlos Baldomir exposed Judah and put to rest his vision or anyone's vision of grandeur for Zab.  The light punching Baldomir rocked and wobbled Judah several times and out hustled him on his way to the welterweight championship, proving Zab is a much better trash talker than he is a fighter.

Up in smoke went his big pay days with Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton. His best bet to resurrect what's left of his career is to fight the faded Kostya Tszyu. With the chin he showed Saturday night that will prove to be no easy task. The last thing a fighter loses is his punch and Zab can expect the faded Tszyu to bring his punch to the dance. Forget Mayweather or Hatton, Judah will be cannon fodder.

As usual, Judah's antics before, during and after the fight were obnoxious and boring. He came into the ring to the beat of hip hop music acting like a thug. During instructions and through the first half of the fight, he kept in character. His hip hop thug persona took a hiatus courtesy of a Baldomir right hand in the seventh round. He wobbled like a wounded duck. Nothing like getting hurt and rocked to bring you down a notch or two.

In the post fight interview with Jim Grey, Zab was as classless as ever. He may have been feeling the residual effects of Baldomir's punches, he seemed confused or was it just Zab being Zab. I believe it was probably the latter. He was blaming Don King for his loss at the same time, he was exclaiming no excuses.

Poor Don King, he can't win. Everyone wants to blame him for something. I'm starting to believe the ills of the world may be a diabolical plot by Don "Doctor Evil" King.  When his fighters' win a close decision, the other fighters and managers claim foul.  When his fighters' lose, it's evidently his fault also.  Well, so much for taking responsibility for your own actions,  blame Doctor Evil.

Many times I feel for the fallen champion.  In this case, I have no such feelings. I believe he has received much more credit than he deserves and the trash talking gangsta persona was a huge turn-off.  Congratulations and hail to the new king Carlos Baldomir for a job well done.

Last week, I wrote an article titled; "And Your Decision Is." The article addressed an actor's over embellished biography were he greatly exaggerated and overstated his former boxing credentials. Most boxing fans probably didn't give the article a second thought or even a glance. Maybe because they felt it wasn't topical, news worthy or I didn't name the actor. The latter could be resolved with a little initiative by the reader, I left clues.

The article turned out to be very topical and the issues discussed within relevant,  as well as the deed being symptomatic. Making the headlines this week are alleged hoaxes perpetuated by two best selling authors. One writer's real identity and gender have been questioned. It seems the writer is not a twenty five year old male prostitute but, a 40 year old woman. The accuracy of the other author's autobiography is in question. He has been accused of wholly fabricating and or wildly embellishing his past.

These two authors have duped many named celebrities who sang their praises. So much for taking advice from some of these pompous celebrities, who know everything about anything but, really know nothing about anything and are too far removed from the every day problems, we the common folk deal with. Lesson to be learned, trust your own instinct and don't put too much credence in what these numb skulls say, whether their on the left or right side of the aisle. They have too much damn money to relate to us, they have their own agendas and many of them are lacking good old common sense.

I take issue with those serving up these little white lies, especially when they are downright deceitful and serve no purpose other than to further their agenda and deceive unwitting and naive people. If I lied on my resumé, I'd be tossed out the door.  We are too tolerant of these phonies and Walter Mittys. Some are downright predators, others are in a fantasy land trying to take whoever they can for a ride.
