ESPN HOSTS CLASH BETWEEN MEXICAN vs PUERTO RICAN WARRIORS

Saturday, April 23, ESPN will treat boxing fans to their first ever pay per view attraction. The card is loaded with interesting fights. The main event will feature Kermit ‘The Killer’ Cintron defending his welterweight title against Antonio ‘Tony’ Margarito. Also on the undercard, Sugar Shane Mosley makes his return to the welterweight division against tough contender David Estrada. The heavyweight feature will showcase Calvin Brock and Jameel McCline in a classic fight between the hungry young lion in Brock looking to establish his place in the food chain against the older McCline.

Cintron will make his appearance in the ring on Saturday coming off  a victory over veteran power puncher Teddy Reid. The young Cintron has built up quite a bit of momentum since turning pro with a 24-0 record and a stunning 22 KO’s. Most have heard of Cintron’s background, a collegiate wrestler turned boxer. He shows talent both athletically and technically, but his amateur background is not as extensive as most prominent welterweights in his position. He is certainly a physical specimen at 5’11 and 147 pounds. When Tito Trinidad met him and was confronted with his size, he could not understand how Kermit is able to get down to the 147lb weight limit. This is not surprising seeing how wrestlers are adept at making weight. With Cintron having had to make weight the majority of his teenage years, he will definitely have the potential of moving up to higher weight divisions as his body matures. His shoulder width is that of a light heavyweight, and his punching power is something to be seriously considered. Hopkins gave him a stamp of approval after sparring with the Boriqua. The Killer has shown that he has cement in both gloves, with his left hook and straight right being devastating. He throws hooks to the body, left and right, with proficiency. His uppers are quite good, and he has developed the ability of looping his straight right with precision making for effective attack from the outside.

Margarito is your classic gritty Tijuana boxer. He has a sturdy chin, and enough heart to go 24 rounds. His conditioning cannot be questioned, and his technique is sound. Margarito had a lackluster performance is his last outing against Lujan. Margarito allowed himself to be hit way more than is his norm, but this could possibly be contributed to his lack of respect for Lujan. Much like Cotto did against Corley. Margarito was never in trouble in the fight. Margarito's strengths are his technique and style. He comes to fight, yet he has the ability to use the now more and more popular style of a boxer/puncher. With a record of 31-4-0 and 22 KO’s, Margarito has pop in his punch. A knockout win on his part is not likely, but he does possess enough power to make his Puerto Rican opponent take the defensive. Margarito’s technique will be an edge in this fight as he has very sound ring generalship and experience from years spent in the boxing hotbed of Tijuana.

This fight is one that I have been waiting for all year. Both men have solid chins, both pack a punch, and both stand at 5’ 11". Margarito has a one inch reach advantage at 73 inches. Cintron will enter the early rounds conservative, waiting and picking his punches. Margarito will most likely look to take his time in the first round, but he will press this fight in the early rounds. As the rounds progress, Cintron will turn up the heat and Margarito will begin to use lateral movement and a very tight defense throughout. The performance with Lujan is not an indicator as to Margarito’s defense, as he will come prepared for the power of Cintron. Margarito has been sparring with bigger fighters like Marco Antonio Rubio, and will not be as surprised as some think with Cintron’s power. Cintron’s health in his hands is going to be questioned coming into this fight, after hurting his hand in his last bout with Reid. This fight has the potential of ending in the later rounds by KO, but I see this one going the distance.

Margarito’s superior ring movement and boxing skill will carry him to raised hands at the end of the twelfth. Margarito W by decision.
