CORRALES CARAVAN HITS NEW YORK CITY...
by David Kolb
Today in mid-town Manhattan there was a media reception
to discuss, arguably, the greatest fight of all time. Lightweight world
champions Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo produced not only what many
regard as the greatest, most exciting fight in history, but also one of the most
dramatic sporting events ever.
CASTILLO - CORRALES: DID THE WINNER
LOSE AND THE LOSER WIN?...by Aladdin Freeman
Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales will be linked together
forever in fighting lore. The match-up truly was an epic battle between an
immovable object and an unstoppable force. I was happy for boxing and for
the diehard fans, up until about the last two minutes left in the 10th
round.
CASTILLO-CORRALES: FIGHT OF THE YEAR?
NOT SO QUICK... by Kenny Perrault
It was a great fight yes, but greatest fight ever? I don't think so. Had
Corrales gotten up without the short breaks for the mouthpiece and then
stopped Castillo I might buy more into the greatest fight ever, but as of
now I can't...
If the
voting for Fight of the Year were done today Castillo-Corrales would be the
clear victor, mostly because it has been the best Fight of the Year to date and
because it's still the freshest fight in our memory.
WORLD BOXING COUNCIL NEWS: COMMITTEE
WILL BE NAMED TO REVIEW CORRALES-CASTILLO
“The lightweight championship of the world was held under the
trademark of the WBC, and is our obligation to respond to all matters that
receive a request, and we think that there was something that was done wrong. It
is our obligation to those who trust the WBC’s impartiality, rules, and actions..."
SHAW TO APPOINT COMMITTEE TO REVIEW
WBC COMMITTEE NAMED TO REVIEW CORRALES-CASTILLO!
"I will be naming my own committee to review the WBC committee, including
the true reason of its genesis, its true purpose and its final findings...
I
will not sit back and allow Diego’s victory to be tainted, and I will name a
blue ribbon committee to investigate. I have an obligation to Diego,
as his promoter, and as a promoter of the Corrales-Castillo fight, to get to
the bottom of this. This is an outrage...
CASTILLO-CORRALES:
FIGHT OF THE DECADE... by Tom Dickey On Saturday night
I felt like a kid again as I was watching the Diego Corrales-Jose
Luis Castillo fight. I found myself screaming and letting out a few
oohs and ahs. In the tenth round I even found myself jumping off my
couch as Corrales went down twice and later when referee Tony Weeks stopped the
fight. Like anyone else who watched Saturday's lightweight title fight, I felt I
had just watched something special...
CORRALES WILLS HIS WAY TO VICTORY IN
'FIGHT OF THE YEAR' AFFAIR...
by Chris Robinson
Corrales vs. Castillo was a fight we had all been looking
forward to and it lived up to its hype in every area. Corrales put all of his
chips on the table early, electing to stand toe to toe with Castillo. The result
would see both men give and take a high volume of punches while also trading
momentum shifts all along the way.
CORRALES MAGIC CLAIMS THE NIGHT... by George Elsasser
Last evening’s non-stop back and forth dandy, from Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, NV
with WBC lightweight champ Jose Luis Castillo and WBO strap owner Diego
Corrales was truly a one of a kind thriller...
Call it a battle of attrition in the proverbial trenches if you like - but be
sure to include WW1 trenches, to better picture these two warriors that were
willing to die with their boots on.
CORRALES BEATS CASTILLO IN A DRAMATIC
FINISH... by Oleg Bershadsky
It is very rare when a fight that has already fairly
ambitious expectations actually surpasses them. The fight between Diego
“Chico” Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo was one of these rare occasions as
both boxers fought the fights of their lives in an action packed fight with a
dramatic finish. When the two biggest punchers in the lightweight division
stepped into the ring it was apparent that the fight was not going to go the
full 12 rounds.
A CONVERSATION WITH JOSE LUIS CASTILLO... by Aladdin Freeman
Saturday May 7th at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime, a Fight of the Year candidate is set
to jump off as WBC Lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo 52-6-1 (46 KO) will
fight WBO Champion Diego Corrales 39-2 (32 KO) in a unification bout. The winner
will also be billed as “The Ring” champion and no doubt jump up in the pound for
pound standings.
DINAMITA'S' QUEST CONTINUES: TOPIC TO TOPIC WITH JUAN MANUEL
MARQUEZ... by Chris Robinson
The road that a fighter follows is often very long and winding,
with obstacles around just about every corner. When it comes to prizefighters,
the old phrase ‘Only the strong survive’ is quite fitting, as it takes a rare
breed to fulfill the role of a true champion. Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez
is no stranger to adversity, and after twelve years and forty six fights into
his boxing career his path is far from over.
CASTILLO-CORRALES: 'FIGHT OF A LIFETIME' CANDIDATE...
by Mike Leanardi
Regardless of how high your expectations were for Jose
Louis Castillo vs Diego "Chico" Corrales, the fight itself easily exceeded
them. What was highly touted as a potential "Fight of The Year" candidate
turned out to be a legitimate fight of a lifetime candidate.
MARQUEZ SCHOOLS POLO BY UNANIMOUS
DECISION... by George Elsasser
The Saturday Showtime title twin bill opened with defending WBA/IBF
featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez in a masterful boxing exhibition,
while schooling challenger Victor Polo over 12 stanzas, to the tune of 120-107,
119-108, 118-109.
A VIEW FROM THE GALAXY: CAMPBELL
SIZES UP CORRALES-CASTILLO... by Chris Robinson
If Diego decides to box it can be boxer vs. puncher. It Diego
decides to punch it’s going to be puncher vs. puncher. It’s a pick 'em. Diego is
probably the bigger puncher but Castillo is a volume puncher. Castillo is so
relentless and that volume turns into power as the rounds go on. Both guys make
their styles work for them and it's going to be a beautiful thing to see who
makes it work the best.
CASTILLO vs CORRALES: SHOWTIME PRESENTS LIGHTWEIGHT
SHOOTOUT... by Xavier 'El Mago' Cepeda
This Saturday, May 7, Showtime will
showcase the talents of Diego “Chico” Corrales against Jose Luis “El Temible”
Castillo for the dominant position in the lightweight division. The talk on
this fight has not been the belts up for grabs, but rather whose pressure will
prevail.
WHY CASTILLO SHOULD WIN... by Jim Amato
This should be an exciting battle.
The power of Corrales versus the chin and will of Castillo. I feel
in the end that the chin will emerge with the win.
CASTILLO - CORRALES: OPEN MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES Castillo:
“I am not concerned about whether Corrales has a good
chin or not. I just hope when I hit him, he does not get up. This fight
is not going the distance and might even end really early.”
Corrales:
“Everything about
Castillo impresses me. He is a consistent, true champion who always
finds a way to win. I respect his power, but I am not concerned about
getting knocked down. Because I know I will get up."
MARQUEZ - POLO OPEN MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES... Marquez:
I want to fight the best. I would love to fight Marco Antonio Barrera or
Eric Morales, and would be willing to move up to 130 pounds. I want a rematch
with Manny Pacquiao, so we can find out who really won our fight." Polo:
“I know this is my last chance, and I am desperate
for Saturday to get here. I have trained really well in Colombia and
feel sure I am going to finally win a world title."
MARQUEZ - POLO MEET THE PRESS... Marquez: "Some may think otherwise, but I think that
I am fighting a real tough guy here. He has fought for the
championship quite a few times and has done well in those
fights."
Polo: "I have had a lot of controversial results
in my career. I hope that the referees in this fight with Juan
Manuel are able to do their job like I always do and keep track
of what is going on in the ring. I am not afraid of whatever
happens."

CASTILLO
vs CORRALES: THE FORGOTTEN MEGA FIGHT... by
Mike Leanardi
It seems all the buzz in the boxing world is about Felix Trinidad fighting Winky
Wright, or about Floyd Mayweather fighting Arturo Gatti. Then there is Kostya
Tszyu's fight with Ricky Hatton to talk about. Let's see, what else... Oh,
Bernard Hopkins is going to fight Jermain Taylor late this summer. Fernando
Vargas is back, that has been talked about quite a bit. It seems as though I, as
with everyone else, am forgetting something. Oh, that's right Jose Luis Castillo
(52-6-1 46 KO's) and Diego "Chico" Corrales (39-2 32 KO's) are fighting each
other in a Lightweight unification bout.

Castillo's boxing ability is not going to draw comparisons to
Willie Pep. Basically he is a methodical plodder who is very adept cutting off
the ring. It is up to Diego to avoid getting pinned and pummeled.
DIEGO
CORRALES: "COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, I'M LEAVING WITH THOSE BELTS" ...
by Tom Dickey
Diego "Chico" Corrales will be meeting up with
José Luis Castillo on May 7th to determine who the true lightweight champion of
the world is. On Tuesday, Corrales along with Castillo met with the press during
a conference call, and had a lot of interesting things to say. As usual with these two, everything was civil.
JOSE LUIS CASTILLO:
"WHATEVER HIS STRATEGY IS, I'LL WIN" ... by Tom
Dickey
Jose Luis Castillo is coming off an impressive win over Julio Diaz, just a few
months ago. He's taking no breaks as he will step in with the other lightweight
titlist on May 7th, Diego Corrales. Castillo has always been a fighter who will
fight anybody, and he will prove that again on May 7th.
DIEGO CORRALES: EXCITED AND EAGER TO FIGHT
CASTILLO...
An Exclusive Interview by Tom Dickey
Diego "Chico" Corrales has risen up to be one of
the top pound for pound fighters in the world. He is
coming off two huge victories over Joel Casamayor, and
previously unbeaten Acelino Freitas. He's not taking a break of any sort with an
easy fight, his next one is no exception. Coming up on May 7th Corrales will go
against top lightweight Jose Luis Castillo, who has also been on a tear of late.
JUST ANOTHER STEP: TOPIC TO TOPIC WITH
DIEGO 'CHICO' CORRALES... by Chris Robinson
Diego ‘Chico’ Corrales has always struck me as being a rare breed of
prizefighter. The WBO Lightweight Champion is willing to take on all comers and
fights each fight as if it’s everything to him. Despite several ups and downs
over the past, Corrales is exactly where he wants to be, with perhaps the
biggest fight of his career on the horizon.
Surely some will lean to the bigger puncher Corrales … understandable,
resumé sparkles at 39-2 with 32 via the knockout route … but let’s not
forget the two debits arrived via TKO’s to Mayweather back in 2001, and
Casamayor in 2003 - yes, the Casamayor loss was reversed by Diego in split
decision win some five months later on March 6, 2003.
by Jocelyn Saurini
Wednesday at the Mandalay Bay Casino in
Las Vegas, Jose Luis Castillo, Diego Corrales and their extensive posses
announced their May 7th Showtime fight for
the WBC/WBO Lightweight Championship. The fight will be twelve-rounds, but
according to all parties involved, there’s no chance the fight will go the
distance. Given the recent history of both fighters, it’s entirely
believable that they’re right when they make that prediction.
CASTILLO-CORRALES PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES Castillo:
“You (Corrales’ team) already
knocked me out and I have not
even stepped into the ring yet. At least give me a chance."
Corrales: “Castillo is the best lightweight fighter in the
division other than
myself. He is a great champion and I have a lot of respect for him.”
