The age 36 Cuban southpaw simply had too
much in all departments over a relative rookie challenger -
the Casamayor 39 priors reads like a who’s who résumé - the
Katsidis rap sheet a collection of no-names.
The one and only prayer for the visitor
from Toowoomba, Australia a long shot - the game plan was to make
it busy from start - if lucky, ol’ Casa baby maybe arrived
without legs for them proverbial championship rounds - not to
be.
Opening candle finds Katsidis sitting on
the canvas - not once, but twice - courtesy of the boxing
basic “one-two” - the jab quickly followed by a straight left
to the chin - but the visitor survives the round.
Still, Casamayor would open the door a
crack when opting to save a little for the late rounds -
enough for Katsidis to pick up the pace and steal some stanzas
via busier work ethic - but not until stanza six was there a
hint he just may pull the rabbit out of the hat.
CASAMAYOR COMES FROM BEHIND TO
STOP KATSIDIS IN THE TENTH ROUND... by Oleg Bershadsky
The fight between Joel
Casamayor and Michael Katsidis was termed as experience vs.
youth. The question was whether an old cagy veteran could use
his guile to overcome a young and hungry lion. The fight
started off in the worst possible way for an overly anxious
Katsidis, who ran into a Casamayor left hand only seconds into
the fight. The left hand put a stunned Katsidis on the canvas;
Casamayor followed up with another left as his opponent was
already down, drawing no response from the referee. To his
credit Katsidis jumped up quickly only to run into another
straight left hand and taste the canvas for the second time in
the first round. Katsidis would once again beat the count and
finish the round throwing back.
CASAMAYOR COMES FROM BEHIND TO STOP KATSIDIS IN THE TENTH ROUND... by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
WBO Lightweight champ, Michael
Katsidis (23-1, 20 KO’s) entered the ring at the Morongo
Casino in Cabazon California wearing a Spartan helmet, a
tattooed sun that takes up his whole back and an
undefeated record. He’s known as a big puncher and he fights
with an intensity fight fans love.
Thirty-six-year old, WBC co-champion, Joel Casamayor (36-3-1,
22 KO’s) took Michael Katsidis’ WBO title Saturday night in
California in a roller coaster ride of a fight.
KATSIDIS - CASAMAYOR: A BATTLE FOR THE LINEAR
LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP... by Darren Yates from Down Under
I am sure Katsidis has the tools to beat the aging Casamayor but I believe it will be a lot tougher than what
many people are expecting or predicting. The winner of this
bout should be in a position to fight newly crowned WBA, IBF &
WBO Lightweight Champion Nate Campbell who pulled off a Vince
Phillips veteran styled victory over Juan Diaz.
