THE PEOPLE SPEAK ON CASTILLO-CASAMAYOR: AN EXCLUSIVE BRC POLL...
by Elisa Harrison
CASTILLO WINS BY SPLIT DECISION... by Oleg Bershadsky
CASTILLO WINS NARROW VICTORY OVER CRAFTY CASAMAYOR... by James Roberts, ringsideIt looked like another long night for Jose Luis Castillo when Joel 'El Cepillo' Casamayor showed up with significant energy and more intestinal fortitude than we’ve seen in years. Since Casamayor’s embarrassing defeat to Acelino Freitas a ways back, I believed his career was about done... IT WAS SHOWTIME INDEED AT THE MANDALAY BAY DECEMBER 4... by Elisa HarrisonOn paper it had the makings of a dynamite evening of boxing; however, the real deal surpassed all expectations. Keeping up with the tradition of bringing the best boxing on the first Saturday of the month, Showtime network put on a masterful show. It was a boxing fan's dream, and uncommon as it may be these days, the fans who watched got their money's worth and then some. SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING DECEMBER 4 UNDERCARD PARTICIPANTS ADDRESS THE PRESS In the evening’s second televised bout, International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight Champion Jeff Lacy (17-0, 14 KOs) will make his initial title defense against IBF No. 14 contender Omar Sheika (26-6, 17 CASTILLO NIPS CASAMAYOR VIA SPLIT NOD... by George ElsasserThe Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader from Mandalay Bay closed with Jose Castillo retaining the WBC lightweight title by split decision over Cuba’s Joel Casamayor - this one was no easy assignment for the judges at ringside. From the opening bell it would be Castillo in pursuit of the elusive Casamayor with good movement, and a stinging jab and straight left hand - the Mexican attacker would need time to better solve the problem in front of him. Sharkie's Machine by Frank Gonzalez Jr. Jose Luis Castillo (51-6-1-45 KO’s) got the job done Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas against the slick and always-dangerous southpaw, Joel Casamayor (31-3-0-19 KO’s). Casamayor, the former Super Featherweight Champion who moved up to Lightweight has shown in recent bouts that he is not just a highly skilled technical fighter but at times, he can muster up surprising power. Moving up to 135-pounds and taking on one of the best in the division says a lot about his confidence.
SHOWTIME IMPRESSIVE... by Kenny Perrault
PETER LEFT-HOOK A NIGERIAN NIGHTMARE... LYAKHOVICH OUT DUELS GUINN BY UNANIMOUS DECISION... by George ElsasserOn paper it looked like the ideal choice -a first step in regaining lost prospect status for its charge- or, so the Dominick Guinn brain trust thought... Unfortunately, the pigeon turned hawk Serguei Lyakhovich, had other plans - and what we got was an interesting heavyweight chess match that saw the Russian giant out dueling Guinn for the decision win. 'THE WHITE WOLF' LYAKHOVICH UPSETS GUINN... by Art D'Arrigo, Jr. While Lyakhovich posted a very respectable 27-2 record against average competition, what really stood out was his lack of power (only 14 KOs). Against a strong puncher like Guinn, I expected a plodding European unable to keep the bigger stronger Guinn from landing his standout right hand. SAMUEL PETER NEEDS AN IMPRESSIVE STOPPAGE OVER WILLIAMS... by Stephen JonesThis coming weekend sees one of the most promising rising heavyweights take his next steps towards the top of a muddled divisional mix up. Duva Boxing's Nigerian prospect Samuel Peter is to face probably his trickiest task to date in the shape of currently on form Jeremy Williams who is by no means a shrinking violet. 11-27-2004
