CALZAGHE ON HOPKINS: "I'D CERTAINLY PUT HIM OUT TO PASTURE AND SMASH HIM UP"

My life has been pretty crazy in the past fortnight since I unified the super middleweight division by beating Mikkel Kessler.

I have plenty to discuss, but first up I guess I better offer a reply to Bernard Hopkins' kind words about me!

For those of you who didn't read it yesterday, Hopkins basically said he's going to batter me if we fight and that he will give me a "free facelift!"

My favourite quote from his interview is that I am a champion and he is a legend and that he's faced champions before, but I've never faced a legend!

I can only laugh when I hear such things.

For me the chance to fight Bernard Hopkins is appealing because it looks good on the old CV, he might be old but he's a tough guy and a lot of Americans will be skeptical about my chances in his own backyard.

But I have no fear or apprehension whatsoever about facing the guy, I think I'd absolutely destroy him!

I couldn't give the old man a free facelift because he's just too ugly, but I'd certainly put him out to pasture and smash him up.

At the end of the day statistics are more important than brash words and a lot of the fights that have given Hopkins his status as legend' have come against much smaller guys like Winky Wright and Oscar de la Hoya.

Against someone bigger like me he'd have no chance. I am at the top of my game and would be ready to finish his career by beating him comprehensively, by stoppage.

It is great though to hear so many big names in boxing calling me out.

Felix Trinidad, Roy Jones and of course, England's own Carl Froch. Obviously the last one is a joke, but Froch has called me out again and I actually think he's serious.

Coming off the biggest fight of my life and with my stock as high as it's ever been, it's a joke to think I'd fight Froch.

His performance in beating Robin Reid was very poor in my opinion. Luckily for him Reid was a bit of an embarrassment and has now retired.

I feel I've earned the right to go after the biggest fights possible and I have beaten everyone there is to beat at super middleweight.

If Froch fought Mikkel Kessler it'd be a very one-sided fight so what could I possibly get out of fighting Froch now?

There would be zero interest in America and it'd be a fight I would need a lot of motivating for.

Speaking of which, I am enjoying more than anything else the opportunity for a few weeks without having to put my sweats on and pounding the roads first thing in the morning!

Not training is very enjoyable at the moment and I've done some great things since my win.

I've done a lot of press work and some after dinner speaking, but probably the two highlights were encounters with some very famous folk.

Firstly, as you'll have read in the Argus, I met the Prince of Wales last week at a specially arranged presentation at Cardiff Castle.

This was a fantastic honour for me as I was presented with a Lonsdale belt in recognition of my achievement in the sport.

The Prince was a very pleasant man; he was very interested to talk to dad and I and stayed for longer than he was supposed to.

His aids kept ushering him out and he kept coming back in to chat more!

For my mum it was a particularly special day, she was very proud indeed.

On Tuesday I also had a great encounter, meeting the guys from the Foo Fighters. They played a gig in Cardiff and requested that I went. I was happy to do so as I am a big fan of their music and so are my kids.

We met them before the gig and had a couple of beers in their dressing room before they went on stage.

During the gig they pointed me out to the crowd and I got a great reaction, it was a really special night.

They were top guys, really into boxing and again very interested to hear what it's like. Certainly they've now got fans for life with my two boys.

Finally, I have been asked to talk about Sports Personality of the Year.

I think my thoughts on this are pretty clear and I haven't changed my view.

I would dearly love to win and it's great to hear so many people saying that I deserve it.

But I am not going to lose any sleep over it. I am not a boxer because I crave recognition, I do it for the money! Only joking of course! But my career isn't going to be defined by such an accolade; it would merely be a bonus.

What I feel far stronger about is my dad's chances of being named Coach of the Year.

For my money he should be right up at the top of the running, if he's not then it's a big slap in the face.

Dad has four world champions in his gym and hasn't been in the losing corner for over 30 fights, it's an unbelievable record.

I get all the plaudits, but dad deserves just as much praise.

I would also love for our gym to be up for Team of the Year.

Sure we don't fight together, but we are a team in every sense of the word and if athletics squads are eligible, why shouldn't we be?
