It has been an amazing year for
me, culminating in being crowned Sports Personality of the
Year 2007.
My fight
against Mikkel Kessler at the Millennium Stadium was the
obvious highlight, unifying the super middleweight division in
front of over 50,000 fight fans at the Millennium Stadium.
I also
trounced Peter Manfredo in Cardiff back in April on another
special night.
I have gone
to 44 unbeaten in my career and am now dreaming of huge fights
in the United States in 2008 with Americans Bernard Hopkins,
Winky Wright and Jermain Taylor all possible opponents.
However, it
hasn't just been Joe Calzaghe's year, 2007 has seen all eight
members of our Team Calzaghe stable go unbeaten.
My father
Enzo, Britain's coach of the year, now looks after three world
champions, a number one contender in Gary Lockett and a
Commonwealth champion.
We also have
some of the finest young fighters in Britain and they've
really progressed over the past 12 months.
Therefore
this week I have decided to review our brilliant year!
Have a great
Christmas and thanks for your support.
I truly
thought that the Jeff Lacy fight would be my career highlight,
the one that proved I am a special champion.
But I was
wrong, because if the Lacy fight in 2006 was special, 2007
topped it easily!
It's been a
fantastic year for me in the ring and has set me up perfectly
to bow out of boxing in some style in 2008.
I knew I
needed to fight in the spring and while Peter Manfredo was
hardly my dream opponent, his profile from the Contender
reality series in the US justified the fight for American TV.
It was a
fairly comfortable night for me, winning by stoppage in the
third round.
However, the
worst did happen because while I was never going to lose, I
did break my hand pretty nastily by cracking Manfredo in his
head!
That meant a
couple of months of frustration and ended any hopes I had of
fighting three times.
It could
actually have been a career ending injury; I had a nervous few
weeks of waiting before a positive prognosis.
The next
fight in November was worth the wait though, a huge one
against Mikkel Kessler.
This was to
be my night, a career defining fight in front of 50,000 at the
Millennium Stadium, my legacy secured by my 21st world title
defence.
To become
the first man to unify the super middleweight division is
something no one will ever be able to take away from me.
I also
celebrated ten years as a champion in 2007, won both the BBC
Wales and BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards and was
given a special belt by Prince Charles.
Not bad!
However, the
year really belonged to my father, trainer and mentor, Enzo
Calzaghe.
Eight
fighters and he didn't have a loser all year!
In total he
was in the corner for 20 contests and everyone from our
Newbridge stable was a winner.
He's the
best coach in the sport today and I was so proud when he was
named Coach of the Year.
We are all
as good as we are because of his dedication, skill and
motivation and I am proud to be his son.
It shows
what a truly great coach he is in the way he's transformed
guys like Gavin Rees and Bradley Pryce and made them into
world class fighters.
They always
had the talent, but dad's patience and approach transformed
them as people as well as fighters.
We always
talk about Team Calzaghe as a team effort, but it is dad and
his trainers - like my Uncle Sergio - who really deserve the
plaudits.
Next year it
is highly possible that we will have maybe five world
champions all coming from one tiny gym in Newbridge. It's a
staggering prospect.
I feel proud
of my achievements and thank my dad for them.
