Headbutt and low blow, neither called by referee, help Bradley score
controversial decision...

CAMPBELL - BRADLEY RULED A
"NO
DECISION".....
California Commission Rights a Wrong by Changing the Ruling
LOS ANGELES - Don King said last Thursday his 78th
birthday wish was for the California State Athletic Commission to
overturn the decision made in the Aug. 1 prizefight featuring WBO junior
welterweight champion Timothy Bradley vs. Nate Campbell and make it "no
contest."
His wish was granted today.
The CSAC met today in Los Angeles and determined that an accidental head
butt in round three that left a serious gash over Campbell's left eye
should have been ruled no contest after the fight was stopped on advice
of the ringside physician after the round.
This corrects the ruling made in favor of Bradley on the night of the
fight at Agua Caliente Resort, Casino & Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
"I only asked for justice for my fighter Nate Campbell, and that is what
I received from the California State Athletic Commission today,"
promoter Don King said. "I applaud the members of
the commission for righting this wrong, and I have a phone call in to
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to congratulate him on this
important decision.
"This is a victory for the boxers, the sport and the great state of
California upholding the rules of justice and fair play. The fairest
outcome of all is the one they chose where neither fighter's record is
blemished from a match that was halted early due to an accidental clash
of heads."

NATE CAMPBELL WAS ROBBED IN CALIFORNIA... by Frank Gonzalez, Jr.
WBO 140 titlist, Tim Bradley (25-0-1
NC, 11 KO’s) is a very good fighter. He has the look; he works hard and comes
ready to win in every fight I’ve seen him in. His win over Kendall Holt was
impressive, as he got knocked down and still kept his focus and worked hard to
out box the bigger puncher and went on to win a Unanimous Decision that showed
Bradley has the goods. Bradley is a good soldier. His nick name is “Dessert
Storm,” surely a reference to the US war against Iraq and his unquestioning
loyalty to our nation’s foreign policy. But loyalty and honor are not always one
in the same.
Last Saturday at Agua Caliente
Casino, former Lightweight titlist, Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell
(33-5-1-1, 25 KO’s) was robbed when he faced Tim Bradley in Bradley’s hometown.
The robbery occurred when in the third round, Bradley “scored” an accidental
head butt that opened a nasty cut over Campbell’s eye.
BRADLEY RETAINS WBO STRAP; ALEXANDER CAPTURES WBC BELT... by George Elsasser
Nothing dull about the August 1, Saturday Showtime
Special from far out California territory - the good news on paper a twin
bill of 140 pound action.
Junior (The Hitter) Witter in with Devon Alexander
(the Great) for the WBC jr. welter strap, followed by Timothy "Desert
Storm" Bradley facing former lightweight champion Nate "Galaxxy Warrior"
Campbell for the WBO bauble.
Curtain opens with Witter having the edge when
switching from starboard to portside - results in a temporary pause in
the younger southpaw Alexander expected modus operandi.
TIMOTHY BRADLEY WINS
CONTROVERSIAL DECISION RETAINS WBO 140-POUND CHAMPIONSHIP; DEVON
ALEXANDER CROWNED WBC 140-POUND CHAMPION...
Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs) retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Welterweight title with
a highly controversial third round TKO over Nate Campbell (33-6-1, 25 KOs)
on Saturday’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast from the California
desert.
Referee David Mendoza ruled that a
Bradley punch, not an accidental head butt, in the third round caused a cut
and damage to Campbell’s vision that forced the ringside physician to halt
the contest on the advice of Campbell’s corner before the start of round
four.
In the SHOWTIME®
co-feature, young gun Devon Alexander
(19-0, 11 KOs) outworked Junior Witter
(37-3-2, 22 KOs) to win the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Super
Lightweight (140-pound) Championship by TKO after Witter quit on his stool
after eight rounds...
CAMPBELL vs BRADLEY ON AUGUST 1st: COULD BE THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING
BEAUTIFUL... By Ricky Ray Taylor
When ESPN picked up the initial Gatti-Ward showdown, the few boxing insiders who
actually knew who the combatants were also knew this match-up had great
potential to be a war for the ages.
As promoters salivated upon pitting them upon one another two more times,
nothing quite compared to Gatti-Ward I. In the end, each fighter, regardless of the myriad of punches thrown and
landed throughout their brutal careers on nearly 100 (combined) opponents, will
historically be linked to this particular trilogy.
It's kind of hard to believe that their first fight was over seven years ago.
In modern times however, a match-up is in our immediate midst which could carry
very similar -if not the same bravado. I'm talking about the August 1st
match-up between "Desert Storm" Tim Bradley 24-0 (11 KOs) vs. "Galaxxy Warrior"
Nate Campbell 33-5 (25 KOs).
HOW THEY PICK 'EM: EXPERTS EXPECT BRADLEY TO DEFEND WORLD TITLE
AGAINST CAMPBELL...
If the media
members who participated in the SHOWTIME Media Prediction Poll have
called it correctly then Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley
will successfully defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) 140-pound title
against former unified lightweight champ Nate "The Galaxxy Warrior" Campbell.
Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs) of North Palm Springs, Calif., will take on Campbell
(33-5-1, 25 KOs), of Jacksonville, Fla., in a "homecoming" fight this Saturday,
Aug. 1, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (9 p.m. ET/PT) from The Show at
Agua Caliente Casino - Resort - Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif., just minutes
from where the champ grew up.
The match-up is a
tough one to call. Campbell, who is fighting for the first time at 140 pounds,
is the more experienced fighter having more knockouts than Bradley has
victories, but, Bradley is the younger, perhaps quicker fighter who has the
benefit of competing in his backyard.
One thing is for
certain: Saturday's main event on SHOWTIME is going to be one heck of a fight.
EVERYONE MAKES WEIGHT!
Everyone made weight and
the fights are ON baby! Undefeated World
Boxing Organization (WBO) TIMOTHY BRADLEY (24-0,
11 KOs), from Palm Springs, Calif. and former World
Lightweight Champion and No. 1 junior welterweight contender
NATE CAMPBELL (33-5-1, 25 KOs), of Jacksonville,
Fla., weighed 139 and 138.5 pounds, respectively, for their
WBO junior welterweight title rumble.
Former World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight champion
JUNIOR WITTER (37-2-2, 22
KOs), of Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom and undefeated
No. 2 contender DEVON ALEXANDER (18-0, 11 KOs),
of St. Louis, weighed 139 and 138.5 pounds, respectively, for
their battle for the vacant WBC super lightweight title.
Promoted by Gary Shaw
Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions, in association
with Don King Productions and Hennessy Sports, the Bradley
vs. Campbell / Witter vs. Alexander 140-pound world
championship doubleheader will be broadcast live from THE
SHOW at Agua Caliente Casino * Resort * Spa in Rancho Mirage,
Calif. on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing, beginning at 9 p.m.
ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast.)

WORLD'S BEST 140-POUND FIGHTERS APPEAR AT PRESS
CONFERENCE; WILL FIGHT ON SHOWTIME SATURDAY...
There were moments of calm
and reflection on what was supposed to be a very festive press
conference Wednesday as the principals for Saturday night's
huge World Boxing Organization (WBO) 140-pound title fight
passed on thoughts and prayers to the families of Vernon
Forrest and Arturo Gatti, who both died tragically within 15
days of each other earlier this month.
Timothy
"Desert Storm" Bradley, Nate "The Galaxxy Warrior" Campbell and Forrest's former
promoter Gary Shaw each paid
tribute to the two fallen fighters. Campbell wore a Vernon hat and Gatti shirt
and spoke at length about his friendships with both. Shaw became emotional at
one point and called for a moment of silence for Forrest at the beginning of the
press conference held at The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort & Spa.
Four of the world's top
140-pound fighters will go at it Saturday as WBO 140-pound champion Bradley
(24-0, 11 KOs) of North Palm Springs, Calif., faces challenger and former
unified lightweight belt-holder Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KOs) LIVE on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT,
delayed on the west coast). The Bradley-Campbell
scheduled 12-rounder will follow a second 140-pound world title fight on
SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

The pride of Montebello, California and a member of the 2004
Mexican Olympic team, Abner Mares (18-0, 11 KO's) is a budding
star both in the United States and in Mexico (originally from
Guadalajara, Mexico). Blessed with a full arsenal of weapons in
the ring, the 23-year-old Mares won the NABO bantamweight title
with a seventh round stoppage of Former World Champion Isidro
"Chino" Garcia of Guerrero, Mexico in September of 2007 and
defended the crown twice with wins over Argentinean David
Marchiano and Diosdado Gabi of the Philippines. After an
impressive victory over 15-1 Jonathan Arias in June of 2008,
Mares stopped Jonathan Perez in six rounds this past May. On
August 27th, he hopes to continue on his road to the top of the
118-pound division in front of his hometown fans.
A former United States amateur champion, Oxnard's "Dangerous"
David Rodela (13-1-3, 6 KO's) is hitting his stride in the pro
ranks with a series of big wins over the last two years,
including victories over Jose Luis "Mapachito" Soto Karass, Julio
Gamboa, Ramon Ayala and former world champion Kevin Kelley. He
continued his win streak in 2009 with a ten-round win over Marlon
"Rata" Aguilar in January, followed by another victory against
Juan Garcia on June 11th in the first installment of "Fight Night
Club". On August 27th, Rodela hopes to continue his winning
streak by notching another victory at Club Nokia.
Opponents for Mares and Rodela, as well as the remaining bouts,
will be announced soon. For more information visit
