STONEY-RUIZ: A WAR OF WORDS OR WILL IT LIVE UP TO THE PRE-FIGHT PROMOTION HYPE?

By Oleg Bershadsky

For the first time the main point of discussion prior to a “championship” fight is not about who will win or lose, but about whether the fight will meet its modest expectations. It seems everyone is more worried about the fight being a complete bore more than the actual outcome. Let’s face it, for most of us the outcome is irrelevant, we just want to see a good fight. Personally, I’m torn about who I want to win. On one hand I’m bored with watching a typical John Ruiz fight while on the other hand I’m also tired of hearing James Toney do more talking than fighting. That puts me on the side of those who simply hope that this fight will have at least a moderate amount of action and excitement.

But let’s be realistic, do we really expect a Fight of the Year candidate? I seriously doubt it. So what can possibly entice a boxing fan to watch this fight? Why simply because it is a boxing fight, which by definition makes it unpredictable and that’s what we love about it. For all we know John Ruiz will decide to not hold for once, and instead go out there and let his hands go. Or Toney might accomplish what no one since David Tua has done and knock Ruiz out. Wishful thinking? Perhaps. But definitely not impossible,  no matter how unlikely it may seem.

Well, ok, back to reality. I predict the fight will go something along these lines. Ruiz will perhaps be more aggressive in a futile attempt to appear more exciting. In the end he will return to his usual style that had   been working for him all this time and who could blame him. Toney, on the other hand, will try to steal a page out of the Roy Jones Jr. blueprint on how to beat Ruiz. He will use his quickness and boxing ability to confuse and outland Ruiz.

I know I said the outcome doesn’t really matter but I’ll take a crack at it anyway. What I predict is a controversial decision no matter who wins. I have seen Ruiz pull out some questionable victories and I don’t think this time will be any different. I just hope that two things come out of this fight.

  1. I hope we get a truly enjoyable fight, which are currently in short demand in the heavyweight division.

  2. If the fight turns out to be a complete bore with a controversial decision, please let there be no rematch. I can’t stand to watch anything resembling the Ruiz-Holyfield trilogy.

This Saturday night all the talk will finally come to an end and we’ll get to decide ourselves whether these two men deserve all this attention we are currently bestowing on them.
