Samuel Peter came into this fight with supreme confidence and determination to silence the critics who cast doubt on his first victory over James Toney. From the first round the change in Peter’s attitude was clearly apparent as he came after Toney immediately, trying to knock the smaller man out. He threw punches with the fury of a man who was trying to prove something, a man who was not going to be denied. Toney managed to survive the initial onslaught despite taking several hard right hands.

Peter’s strategy appeared to be much the same, which was to overpower Toney, except this time around its implementation was much more successful. The visible improvement in Peter’s stamina and skill level was the difference in his increased effectiveness. He was able to throw combinations to both the head and the body at a consistent rate while keeping good distance, which minimized Toney’s ability to counterpunch.

Toney, on the other hand, was once again unable to hurt Peter even when he landed cleanly. Despite having his moments in the fight, it was obvious that Peter’s punches did by far the most damage. What made this fight even less competitive was the fact that Toney’s punch output also suffered, as he was mostly on the receiving end for most of the fight.

In the end, Toney’s size was his biggest handicap, as he just proved too small to handle a real big heavyweight. Nothing exemplifies this point better as when Peter was able to knock Toney down with a left jab in the second round. Peter’s conditioning, more polished offense, and power simply proved to be more than a match for Toney’s ring savvy as he moved to earn a unanimous decision victory. (119-108, 118-110, 118-110)

In this fight Peter finally looked like he might actually be the future of the heavyweight division. The marked improvement in his offensive skills, coupled with his trimmer and more in shape physique are going to make him an even more dangerous boxer. Also a convincing win over a boxer of Toney’s caliber is sure to boost his confidence and solidify his standing as one of the best heavyweights in the world. After this bout the road for Peter is clear, it is to prepare for the fight with Maskaev which will bring him one step closer to unifying the titles.

For Toney, this fight has to be disappointing, as this was a one-sided victory for Peter. However, it is not like James Toney to concede victory and until someone does knock him out he will continue to test the heavyweight division. Like him or not, he is here to stay and he still poses a threat to anyone he fights. If he is serious about continuing to be a competitive heavyweight, then his weight has to be addressed as it's increasingly obvious that he will have to rely more on his technique and ring movement to overcome his size disadvantage.
