DOES RICKY HATTON EVEN STAND A CHANCE?

The clear media favorite in this fight, not surprisingly, is Floyd Mayweather Jr. He is the best pound for pound boxer in the sport, with superior hand speed, and natural talent rivaled by no one. If these advantages weren’t enough, he will also be fighting on his home turf of Las Vegas, Nevada, and not having to adjust to the time difference may be another advantage he has over Hatton. So does Hatton even stand a chance with all this stacked against him? How can he hope to beat a better boxer with tremendous defense, away from his home town of Manchester?

Ricky Hatton while seemingly a huge underdog has a real shot to win this fight. For one he is a pressure fighter like no other and what separates him from other pressure fighters is his intelligence. He doesn’t simply throw punches hoping to hit something, his aggressiveness is controlled and is part of a strategy that surpasses a mere desire to put pressure. On top of that Ricky Hatton is fighting for an entire country of England, while Mayweather appears to be fighting for money and in my mind there is a difference in mindset between the two. Hatton also can look at what De La Hoya and Castillo managed to do against Mayweather, as these two fighters put up by far the biggest challenges to Mayweather. So will Mayweather outclass Hatton, or will he fold under the Brit's pressure?

This fight is not a give me by any means. It is wise to remember that Hatton has never lost a fight, while beating some tough opposition, including the likes of Kostya Tszyu. He always managed to step up when needed most and this time around will be no different. I predict that early on Mayweather will land clean punches and remain elusive. However, as the fight moves into the later rounds Hatton will slowly wear Mayweather down and then it will come down to whether Floyd has the heart to continue under adversity he has never faced before. I predict that the fight will be much closer than speculated. I also predict that Hatton will beat Mayweather by a close decision, barring any hometown shenanigans. This fight will be the greatest test each boxer has yet to face and I believe Hatton will not let Mayweather off the hook like De La Hoya did and instead fight every minute of every round. It might not be long till American fighters have to travel to England for a “real” fight. And why not? No one packs stadiums with tens of thousands of fans like the Brits do.
