On December 11th the WBC champion Vitali Klitschko will make the first defense of his title against No.7 ranked challenger Danny Williams who recently emerged in the spotlight after defeating Mike Tyson. Today both fighters participated in a national conference call to discuss their upcoming bout. Klitschko began the conference by expressing his great disappointment at the destruction of his dream of fighting Mike Tyson. However, he quickly reaffirmed his respect for Danny Williams as a fighter and said that he would not want to underestimate him. Danny Williams was also quick to show his respect to his future opponent by stating that he believes this upcoming fight will be harder than the Tyson fight. While Williams only took five weeks to get ready for the Tyson fight he has already began preparations for his upcoming bout against Vitali Klitschko, and will soon be heading to Las Vegas to continue his training away from his recently gained popularity in England. Williams said that the biggest change for him after the Tyson fight was all the attention he has been receiving from the British public. “There’s a lot of pressure because now people believe I have a chance,” Williams said as he went on to recount his past troubles that he believes were caused by him putting too much pressure on himself. “After losing the British title I decided to be relaxed and not put a lot of pressure on myself.” He proudly declared that those troubles are over with and that now the world will see his true potential. Williams also addressed concerns about him being compared to Buster Douglas and Hasim Rahman, both of whom are regarded as “one-hit wonders” that faded away after career defining victories. The newly revitalized Williams expressed his lack of concern that this will happen to him as he confidently said, “I learned from other peoples’ mistakes.” In return Vitali Klitschko went on to address the concerns over his long 8 month layoff after his fight with Corey Sanders. Klitschko revealed that both of his hands were slightly hurt in the hard fought Sanders fight and that he just needed to take time to rest and let his body rejuvenate itself. The WBC champ also made known his ultimate dream of being an undisputed heavyweight champion. He used an old Russian saying to explain his dream and desire to unify the Heavyweight belts. The Russian saying is, “It’s a bad soldier who doesn’t have a dream to be a general.” Klitschko took that saying and transformed it into what seems to be the equivalent in the boxing world which is, “It’s a bad boxer who doesn’t want to be champion.” Both fighters appeared confident yet showed a good deal of respect for each other. Klitschko believes he is the strongest Heavyweight boxer on the planet and wants to prove it to the world. Danny Williams has revitalized his career and has an entire nation believing he can win. With both fighters still hungry and out to prove their dominance this looks like an exciting match-up. The fight will take place on Saturday, December 11, at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will also be shown live on HBO Pay-Per-View at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Madison Square Garden, the original choice for the fight, was not chosen due to “logistical problems” and concerns over bad weather which affected the Vitali Klitscho/Kirk Johnson fight last year which only 11,000 people attended because of the terrible snow conditions.
