California has a storied history of being the home base for
some of boxing’s greatest brother teams - The Quarrys, The Ruelas, and The
Sandovals, just to name a few. The latest heirs to this tradition, La Habra
super middleweights Librado Andrade and Enrique Ornelas, are two of the sport’s
hottest young rising stars, and on Thursday, September 30, both will put their
unbeaten records on the line in co-featured bouts at the legendary Grand Olympic
Auditorium in Los Angeles. Both ten rounders, part of an action-packed night of boxing presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miller Lite, will be televised live on HBO Latino’s “Oscar De La Hoya Presents Boxeo De Oro”, beginning at 10pm ET / PT. For true fight fans though, Andrade and Ornelas’ combined 38-0 record is just the tip of the iceberg, as three more unbeaten up and comers - Santiago Perez, Edgar Vargas, and Rhonda Luna - will risk their perfect records on September 30, making this night a “Perfect Storm” indeed. And in true Golden Boy Promotions tradition, none of these highly touted prospects are being given an easy road to stay undefeated - in fact, each fight has the potential to see a “0” turn into a “1” at any given moment. In the main event, NABO and NABA super middleweight champion Librado Andrade (19-0, 13 KOs) squares off in a non-title ten rounder against Ukraine’s hard-nosed Vitali Kopitko (24-6, 9 KOs). Andrade is on a high-profile hot streak, having scored seven knockdowns in his last two bouts against world-class competitors Tito Mendoza and previously unbeaten Willie Stewart. The hard-hitting La Habra resident is ranked fifth in the world by the WBO and eighth by the IBF, but he needs to remove Kopitko from his path if he wants to keep rolling to a world title shot. Known as “Dr. TKO”, the southpaw Kopitko is a no-nonsense fighter in the ring who has been in with the likes of Bruno Girard, Howard Eastman, and Willie Stewart, and who knows that an upset of Andrade means a world ranking and a new beginning in the 168-pound weight class. Enrique Ornelas (19-0, 13 KOs), a former state champion wrestler, turned to the sweet science after high school and hasn’t looked back, walking through each of his opponents and improving with every fight. In his last bout, on July 15, Ornelas stopped fellow prospect Miguel Martin in the seventh round. Concord, California’s Christian Cruz (8-1, 6 KOs) is a man on a mission in his first nationally televised bout, and the hard-hitting 25-year-old’s mission is to beat Enrique Ornelas for local bragging rights. Always willing to stand toe-to-to with the best available opposition, Cruz decisioned hometown favorite Dallas Vargas in Ohio on July 16, and is looking to carry this momentum into his bout with Ornelas on September 30. Heading up the stellar undercard of unbeatens is 8-0 (2 KOs) Santiago Perez, a Los Angeles native who will face an opponent to be announced in an eight round welterweight bout. Santa Ana’s favorite son, Edgar Vargas (6-0, 1 KO), will bring the fans out in force when he tackles always-tough Missael Nunez (2-3) of Los Angeles in a junior lightweight six rounder, and rounding out the show is a six round female featherweight bout between Rowland Heights’ Rhonda Luna (6-0, 1 KO) - perhaps the toughest high school English teacher in the world - and Tulsa’s Cindy Christian (0-1-1). Tickets for the “Perfect Storm” show, affordably priced at $20, $35, $75, and $100 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, or by calling Nicole at Golden Boy Promotions at 213-489-5631.
