IS THE STAGE SET FOR BARRERA vs BARRIOS?... by
Chris Robinson
Just moments ago Marco Antonio Barrera
iced Mzonke Fana in the 2nd round with a devastating right hand shot. The win
keeps Barrera’s momentum rolling, as he adds on to the highly successful year he
had in 2004. Next in line for the ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ very well could be Jorge
‘La Hiena’ Barrios, who lived up to his own hype with a dominating 4th
round TKO over Mike Anchondo last night.
WINNER... AND NEW CHAMPION: GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS
SALUTES JORGE BARRIOS, THEIR NEWEST CHAMPION
“Jorge Barrios is a true warrior and his performance against Mike Anchondo
was explosive and exciting,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden
Boy Promotions. “This victory put the 130-pound division on notice
that Jorge is here to stay, and we’re looking forward to more great things
from him in the future.”
ANCHONDO-BARRIOS:

EXPOSES 'MIGHTY' MIKE; JULIO RETIRES VILCHES... by George
Elsasser
The ESPN2 carnival made a belated pit
stop at the Miccosukee Resort down Miami, Florida way - the televised offering
finally began at 23:30 hours when preempted by a meaningless college beizbol
game that went 16 innings to finish, not to mention other unconnected studio
madness with host Brian "No Clue" Kenny doing the anchoring.
BARRIOS
Probablemente Anchondo
se entrenó en una taquería.
MIKE WASN'T SO MIGHTY AFTER ALL...
Jorge Rodrigo Barrios, AKA "La Hiena' derailed 'Mighty' Mike Anchondo on
and off the scales at Miami's Miccosukee
Resort and Gaming. Barrios became the new WBO super featherweight champion
by way of 4th round TKO, much to the delight of the very vocal and
enthusiastic sold out crowd, a great part of which were fellow
Argentineans.
'WEIGHT' JUST A MINUTE, BARRIOS HAS A REAL CHANCE...
by Chris Robinson
While not terribly familiar with the Argentinean, I had caught his back
and forth battle with Acelino ‘Popo’ Freitas a year and a half back, and
in watching Barrios lose valiantly I had seen enough to know that his
heart and determination were world class. Up until today’s weigh in I
still had to call Anchondo as the clear favorite, but moments ago I was
informed that Mike failed to make the 130 lb. limit, coming in at 134 ½
pounds, thus making me reevaluate things even more clearly.

ANCHONDO LOSES HIS TITLE ON SCALES: 'LA HIENA' BARRIOS READY TO TAKE CROWN
FRIDAY NIGHT
Mike Anchondo became the former WBO super featherweight champion Thursday
afternoon at the Miccosukee Gaming Resort in Miami, Florida, after
weighing in 4 ½ pounds over the division limit of 130 pounds for his
Friday night showdown with Argentina’s Jorge Rodrigo Barrios.
ROBERTO
BENITEZ MAKES IT OFFICIAL
... by Chris Robinson
In the madness of Jorge Barrios’ surprising KO win over Mike Anchondo, we were
witness to a young man making his first venture into the pro game. Roberto
Benitez decisioned a very game Jenkens Alvarez, winning a unanimous 40-36
decision. In what could be the start of an excellent career, Benitez showed a
great arsenal of punches, along with the poise of a seasoned pro.
FIREWORKS AT MICCOSUKEE PRESS
CONFERENCE IN MIAMI
Jorge "La
Hiena" Barrios, (42-2-1, 30 KOs), lived up to expectations as
he challenged WBO super feather champion Miguel "The Powerful"
Anchondo, (25-0, 18 KOs), taunting him by calling him a "fake
Mexican" at today's press conference, which took place at Luna
Restaurant in Miami. The much anticipated and exciting championship
fight is part of a Main Events and Team Freedom co-promotion.
In
the co-feature, unbeaten welterweight Joel Julio (21-0, 18 KOs)
takes on Carlos Vilches (43-5-2- 25 KOs) in a ten-rounder. Both
bouts will be televised by ESPN2. Tickets are $75, $50, $30 and $15,
but they are going fast. For more information call 305-222-4600.

My best memory would be when I competed in the 1998 Goodwill Games in
my hometown of NYC and shined on my 18th Birthday on HBO. I have traveled
all over the world, and enjoyed going to Europe and my native Dominican
Republic. I have traveled to England, Azerbaijan, Ireland, Puerto Rico,
Argentina and Mexico. I have fought against the very best in the nation
and world. I was able to defeat the # 1 ranked fighter in the world from
CUBA, Manuel Mantilla in the Goodwill Games.
