R.I.P. ALEXIS ARGUELLO (1952-2009) ... by Bill Stephens
Former champion Alexis Arguello will be missed by his many friends and fans he has accumulated over his distinguished career. The Sweet Science will always be grateful for the contributions that Arguello has given to the world of Boxing. A very sad ending to a world class champion in and out of the ring.
Former champion and Hall of Fame Inductee Aaron "The Hawk" Pryor pays tribute to his good friend and one time competitor. Aaron Pryor's website, www.hawktime.com has a touching tribute with photos of the two former champions together.

ALEXIS ARGUELLO DEAD AT 57... by Frank Gonzalez Jr.

Alexis Arguello (82-8, 65 KO's), was found dead at his home in Managua, Nicaragua on Wednesday. Arguello was 57 years old. Arguello's nickname was "The Explosive Thin Man," ("El Flaco Explosivo"), and was one of Boxing's greatest champions.

According to Nicaraguan sources, it is suspected that Arguello shot himself through the heart, but as is common with early reports, the actual details of how he died are yet to be determined. It's hard to believe Arguello, who never quit in one of the toughest sports in the world, would kill himself.

ALEXIS ARGUELLO FOUND DEAD IN HIS HOME IN NICARAGUA... by Elisa Harrison
Univision reports that Hall of Famer, three-time world champion Alexis Arguello was found dead this morning in his house in Nicaragua. The 57-year-old Arguello was elected mayor of Managua last year. Arguello turned pro in 1968 and won his first title by knocking out Ruben Olivares for the featherweight crown. He later captured the super featherweight and lightweight belts, becoming the sixth boxer to win titles in three weight classes.
He retired in 1995 with a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
Radio Ya said coroners were conducting an autopsy on the 57-year-old mayor to determine the cause of death, but it appeared to be a suicide. The La Prensa newspaper reported he was found with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Rest in peace, champ, you will always rank among the best in the game.
