Eighty years to the day, undefeated No. 1 super
welterweight contender ALFREDO "Perro"
ANGULO played Al Capone, mowing
down Cosme Rivera
in his own St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Making his case as
boxing's most exciting fighter tonight, Angulo (15-0,12 KOs), of Mexicali.
Mexico, extended his incredible knockout streak to 11, dating back to July 14,
2006, stopping the game Rivera at 2:38 of the fifth round. This marked only the
second time in 45 professional bouts that Rivera (31-12-2, 23 KOs), from
Culiacan, Mexico, had not gone the distance. The fight, which was televised
live on HBO, took place at the Bank-Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.
"Tell Ricardo Mayorga, his promoter,
his attorney and the rest of his enablers that they did the right thing keeping
him out of the ring with me. I would have buried him like a dog buries a bone,"
said Angulo, who was originally scheduled to fight Mayorga tonight in a world
title elimination bout before Mayorga pulled out 10 days before the fight. "I'm
the top dog in this division and I dare anyone wearing a world championship belt
to prove me wrong."
Angulo is promoted by Gary Shaw and managed by
Mike Criscio.
