MANFREDO MANHANDLES SPINA... COULD ROY BE NEXT?

By Jim Amato

It wasn't even close... The cream rises to the top... Peter Manfredo Jr. took apart the bigger but less skilled Joey Spina. The bout was stopped in the third round after a game but outclassed Spina got up from a knockdown but took a vicious right hand that prompted the towel to come in from his corner. A wise stoppage. Poor Joey was in way over his head.

With Joe Calzaghe winning tonight and also Mikkel Kessler's impressive KO of Markus Beyer...Well a big opportunity is knocking. How good is Manfredo ? That remains to be seen but he sure is marketable. There is even talk of Manfredo - Roy Jones Jr. Hey, why not ? Manfredo is streaking and Jones is hanging on. It's a fight that would draw a lot of fan interest. Hell, my cheap ass might even pay for that one.

POST FIGHT QUOTES

Peter Manfredo, Jr. – (in ring after the right) “I told everyone I was on a different level (than Spina). I never wanted to take this fight. I never wanted to hurt anybody from Rhode Island, but he kept running his mouth. He made his money, but he took the beating of his life.”

(Post fight press conference) “He isn’t at my level, yet. I just outclassed him. The bad blood was mostly to promote the fight. I used to help him as an amateur and when he turned pro. They call me LaMotta in Freddy’s gym (Wild Card in Los Angeles) because I have such a hard head.”

Joey Spina – (in ring after the fight) “I jammed my thumb (left) and couldn’t do anything else. I’m fine. I didn’t do what I wanted to do – knock him out.”

(Post fight press conference) “It’s business. I broke my hand early in the second round. I never broke my hand before. It gets to your mind and you can’t concentrate. Peter’s a tough guy. I let my hands go but I didn’t think for a minute I hurt him. I never said I didn’t respect him. That’s was people building this up. It’s business. In boxing you don’t make money until you reach a certain level. I never made good money (until tonight) and that’s why I called him out. Peter’s a sharp puncher. He placed his punches in the right spot. He was the better man tonight.”

Allan Green – (in ring after the fight) “I grade myself a C. I didn’t do what my trainers were telling me. Once I got going though…..   I’m going to take the rest of the year off. Hopefully, next year there will be something big.”
