An energetic crowd was on hand at All State Arena in Rosemont, Illinois to welcome ESPN2's Friday Night Fights to town and they saw some great action. Banner Promotions and Hitz Boxing joined forces to put together an action packed six fight card; the result, five knockouts and a national title changing hands.
In the main event, former WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Agapito Sanchez (35-11-3, 18 KO's) upset defending USBA Super Bantamweight Champion Art Simonyan (14-2-1, 7 KO's). It was an exciting fight from the beginning, but Simonyan got off to a bad start when in the first round an accidental clash of heads resulted in a big cut in the corner of his eye. While the cut did seem to bother Simonyan throughout the fight, it was ultimately a looping right hand from Sanchez that would be his demise in the fifth round. While Simonyan did beat the ten count, referee in charge Pet Podgorski did not like what he saw when he looked in Simonyan's eyes and waved the fight off after Simonyan reached his feet. Official time of the bout was 1:39 of the 5th, Sanchez the winner by TKO. The veteran Sanchez, 35, must be hoping this impressive victory in front of a National TV audience can springboard him into one more title shot.
In a very interesting co-feature, exciting middleweight prospect "Irish" John Duddy (11-0, 10 KO's) improved his record by scoring an 8th round TKO victory against the very game veteran Pat Coleman (29-12, 20 KO's). In a very high contact fight, Duddy gave the best of it throughout and while Coleman was standing firm and landing some good shots of his own, Duddy controlled the fight throughout. Duddy showed very good poise and landed many hard body shots throughout the fight until he eventually finished Coleman off with huge right hand late in the final round. Coleman was waved off while still lying on the canvas at 2:30. A large and loud Irish contingent was on hand to cheer on the young fighter and he matched their energy with an impressive performance. I have been told that Duddy is tentatively scheduled for a ShoBox appearance in early September; however, a small cut he obtained in his bout tonight may jeopardize that appearance. Regardless of when his next bout may be, Duddy will definitely be someone to keep an eye on.
That same large Irish crowd was also on hand this evening to support Chicago's own 25-year-old Heavyweight prospect Malachy Farrell (10-0, 8 KO's) who improved his undefeated record in impressive fashion against 39 year old Clinton Boldridge(3-4, 3 KO's). Farrell was in complete control from the very beginning; Farrell floored Boldridge and scored a standing 8 count before the end of the first round. Picking up where he left off, Farrell came out aggressively again in the 2nd and finished Boldridge off with a straight right hand, causing Referee Genaro Rodriguez to call a halt to the bout at 1:19 of the 2nd round.
In other action, Chicago Middleweight Rudy Cisneros (5-1, 4 KO's) won a shutout 4 round unanimous decision against journeyman Leon Pearson (11-14-3, 1 KO). Another Chicago fighter did not fare so well when Demetrice King (8-8, 6 KO's) rallied to stop local Lamar Stephens (6-2-1, 3 KO's), scoring two 4th and final round knockdowns in route to a TKO victory. In a women's attraction Crystal Lake, Illinois' Lois Theobald (2-3-1, 2 KO's) scored a bizarre TKO when her opponent Brandi Davis (0-2) refused to defend herself and continually turned her back to Theobald, forcing Referee Genaro Rodriguez to stop the fight in the opening round.
When it was all said and done, the lively crowd, along with the national TV audience were treated to an exciting, high action card live from Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois that was brought to us by Banner Promotions and Hitz Boxing.
