"ARE WE BEING BUILT By Darren Yates from Down Under |
As a boxing fan who loves the sport, come June 8 I will no doubt make a
hypocrite of myself by watching a bout between two of the fighters I least
like, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis. Normally I cheer for whomever either of
these men are fighting. As far as I am concerned there is only one way this
event will end, in disaster!
We all know Mike Tyson is far from an angel, mentally unstable and probably
does not deserve to have a license to box at all. I wouldn't be surprised if
he feels compelled to better his past insults to the sport. I have a gut
feeling he is going to top the ear biting incident with some worse piece of
behaviour. I do however feel sorry for Mike Tyson as he is portrayed as an
animal in the press and he is expected to deal with all this attention when
he has a mental problem which he cannot control. He has to be medicated just
to deal with every day life, let alone the constant media attention. I
also believe he has been targeted by some gold diggers who attempt to exploit
him because he is wealthy, known to be violent and a potentially easy target.
One of Mike Tyson's admirable characteristics is that he does not profess to
be a good guy, he basically wants to be left alone. He doesn't really like
publicity and certainly doesn't pretend to be something he isn't.
Lennox Lewis on the other hand to me is the Emperor Palpatine (for the Star
Wars fans amongst the readers) or Darth Sidious of boxing. He wants us
all to be believe that he is the savior of boxing when he has actually hurt
the sport with subtle sickening actions.
Lewis is intelligent, sly, deceptive, manipulating, calculating and knows how to
use other people's weaknesses (outside the ring) to his own advantage. Sure, he has
not been in trouble with the law and he has donated funds and time to charities which
I applaud him for. However, he is smart, ruthless and calculating when it
comes to self-promotion.
He claims that this fight is a match between good and evil,
himself being boxing's "Knight in Shining Armour" out to slay the evil
villain! But, let's not forget Lewis' history of poor behaviour for his
own promotion.
He baited Riddick Bowe at ringside after Bowe dramatically beat Evander
Holyfield for the world title, and started a 'slanging' match in what should have
been a proud moment for Bowe; but nooo, Lewis had to steal some thunder in
order to promote himself. How about the wrestling match into which Lewis baited Hasim
Rahman on ESPN? Then the poor taste comments after defeating Rahman.
Now for the big one, our self-confessed alleged hero hits Mike Tyson in the back
of the head during the farcical scuffle at the press conference to promote
their bout. Lewis showed us all his true colours when he did this, when Mike was not
even threatening him and then he says Tyson bit him on the leg when it was he who
lashed out initially and not Tyson, whose actions -no matter how disgusting- were in
retaliation to the blow in the back of the head.
Lewis knew fully well that if there was going to be trouble all the
blame would be pointed towards Tyson, a very smart way for Lennox to cause the
problem and come out of the situation smelling sweet. I am not fooled, Lewis
laid the bait because he knew Tyson would take it.
I do not believe Mike Tyson is scared of Lennox Lewis, I believe the
opposite. I think this fight will be a stinker because Tyson will be trying
to get inside to punch Lewis and Lewis will hold, lean down on Tyson and
whatever else he can do to stop Tyson throwing punches. Lewis is the best
spoiler in the business bar none. Tyson will get frustrated very early and
will probably hit low, on the break and after the bell. Lewis will know that
if he frustrates Tyson the bout will be his. Once Tyson is off his game plan
Lewis might land one of his big punches or he might run and build up points or
more than likely Lewis will win on a disqualification.
I can only hope Tyson uses his superior speed and technique, lands a big punch and
KO's Lewis. I really doubt that this will happen because I fully expect Lewis to
spoil it. Lewis is in this for the money and he will get paid regardless of what
happens before, during or after the bout.
I think we all stand a real good chance of seeing a disqualification
victory for Lewis in this bout and then all hell will break loose. The other big
possibility is that at the end of the first or any of the rounds we might
see some hitting after the bell, wrestling antics, kick, bites or whatever
else these two can think of and the bout may be stopped and declared a no-contest. I
think there will be a lot of disappointed people after this
fight because in no way can I see a satisfactory outcome occurring. I will be one of
those disappointed people as I will be
paying for the fight on PPV just like most of the readers of this article.
My biggest wish will be for both of these men to retire from the sport after
this bout. We need more positive, good examples of boxers for the next generation to
look up to. Some recent examples were the mutual displays of respect shown after the Oquendo-Tua bout, the Tszyu-Tackie bout build up and also the courage displayed by Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward. These are the true boxing heroes. We don't need idiots like Mike Tyson, Zab Judah, Lennox Lewis, Anthony Mundine (for Australian readers) and others dragging the sport
into the gutter.
