TYSON FLASHBACK Y2K

You're Mike Tyson ... and the media wants you tarred and feathered ... wasn't always that way ... not back on Nov. 22, 1986 when at age 20 and in your 28th pro fight you captured the WBC heavy title with a KO2 blitzing of Trevor Berbick.

Was more a case of luv at first sight ... new undefeated kid on block and all ... and they watched in awe as you continued the roll thru 1987 ... March 3 it was “Bonecrusher” Smith by decision for WBA crown ... on May 30 Pinklon Thomas fell in six. And they applauded ... and penned poetry ... and said you'd rewrite heavyweight history ... now it's August and you unified the division with a win over Tony Tucker ... you then closed 1987 via KO7 of Tyrell Biggs.

Year 1988 saw all knockout wins ... Holmes in 4 ... Tubbs in 2 ... Spinks in 1 ... and it continued in ‘89 with KOs over Frank Bruno and Carl “Half-Truth” Williams ... and they marveled over the quickness, power and tenacity ... and then a surprise.

Was a Feb. 11, 90 date over in Tokyo with challenger James “Buster” Douglas ... the new brain trust called it a gimme ... you believed it ... and did the pre-fite prepping at the local geisha houses ... and you paid dearly ... the first blemish on your resume in a KO loss.

And now you were a former champ ... and the media turned on you ... called you a bully and said you were evil ... shouted you were disloyal for dumping Cayton and Rooney for the Don King entourage. You're Mike Tyson and you began the comeback ... and finished 1990 with one round knockouts of Henry Tillman and Alex Stewart ... and then 1991 ... a KO and decision win over Donovan Ruddock ... and then a 3-year stretch at the Indiana Youth Center for the Desiree Washington thing.

But like Douglas A. Mac Arthur you too would return ... 1995 ... August 19 ... and the record book reads WDQ1 over Peter McNeeley ... onus on this one is on Peter’s trainer ... fearing for his fighter's well being after couple knock downs he enters ring resulting in a DQ. Then Dec. 16 and Buster Mathis swoons in 3 ... and now it's 1996 and you are back ... first the WBC title with KO3 over Bruno ... then the WBA crown on Sept. 7 and Seldon falling in one.

But then the two infamous meetings with Holyfield ... first a KO loss in ten ... then the notorious ear-biting disqualification in meeting two ... and the media sighed ... at last the book would close on the once Brownsville, B’klyn bad boy.

Or would it? ... you're Mike Tyson ... and January 1999 it's Botha in five ... and October sees Norris falling in one ... but you're Mike Tyson ... and it's ruled a no-contest ... Norris injures knee while landing on canvas ... and the world watches a fite version of “I've fallen and I can't get up” ... problem was the final punch arrived as a coup de grace ... and seconds after the bell had sounded ending the round.

Now it is summer of year 2000 ... and the one the media loves to hate is hot after Brit heavy Lennox Lewis and his WBC, IBF baubles ... took no more than a Julius Francis in two and Lou Savarese in 38 seconds of opening round to get there. And then a post-fite declaration ...like wanting Lewis’ heart ... and a yearning to ingest his kids as well ... and the media goes bonkers ... and see you as a threat to all mankind ... and want you committed.

All this from the same media that had lauded the once tentative Brit - and shouted how he had finally found the missing link - as in “killer instinct” after a quickie knockout over overrated giant Michael Grant ... the same Grant they had predicted would be the next great and dominant heavy champion.

But the panic is premature ... and the Lewis-Tyson brawl for it all remains on the back burner ... Lewis has other biz pending ... Franz Botha and then a Dave Tua mandatory. And Tyson? Word is while waiting for Lewis he'll be whetting the appetite on a Golota or Izon ... or is the word feasting?

Semper fi,

Geo El
