"WINKY WIN A WALK IN THE PARK"

By George Elsasser

Didn’t take long to see who was in charge in last nite’s junior middle unifier between Sugar Shane Mosley and Ronald 'Winky' Wright … and it wasn’t the one looking ahead to a guy named Tito.

Took no more than four stanzas of Winky tutoring to see it … was in the eyes … Wright began from the opening bell to bring it directly to the betting favorite with a no-nonsense, in command, textbook style performance.

And it had little to do with the lefty-righty thing … Winky doesn’t fight that way … is more of a smaller version of heavy champ Chris Byrd … but with more pizzazz.

No, this one was a clear case of a quicker, better schooled and rounded veteran, mixing accurate offense with a large dose of defensive mastery on a fun nite out with a lesser skilled, one dimensional load ‘em up media favorite.

And so it went to the wire … Winky pitching and Shane catching … and confused … much like in them Forrest fights … question now is where does Wright go to next … the old pro has never before been the one pulling the strings.

We’ve seen the others  … and Mosley is now one of the groupies  … those that were prematurely cloaked with greatness … Sugar, Golden Boy, Ferocious Fernando … all falling soon after buying into the media hype.

But don’t take my word for it … here’s Mosley in post-fite chat with HBO’s Merchant  when being asked what had just happened … "I don’t know what happened in there. It wasn’t anything that he was doing. I just couldn’t do what I wanted to do."

Not very sugary, but a mouth full to be sure.

Judges scoring went 117-111, 117-111, 116-112 … my unofficial went 117-111 in points and 9-3 in rounds.
