"Where Did The Great Heavyweights Go?"

As I sit here writing this article, I remember the glory days of the heavyweight division. The relentless power of the "Brown Bomber" knocking out
Max Schmeling, Rocky Marciano's grueling fighting style or the slick boxing of the "Greatest", Muhammad Ali.
Unfortunately, it seems those days are long behind us. In what was one of the most unentertaining fights that I have ever witnessed, John Ruiz,
the first latino heavyweight champion, retained his title with a controversial draw over the slowed and aged Evander Holyfield. Throughout the
fight, Ruiz held the former four time champ while Holyfield tried to throw his trademark left hook.
At times, "The Real Deal" showed flashes of his old self landing uppercuts and hooks to John's unsuspecting chin, but Ruiz, using his jab
and his gifted wrestling ability, was able to keep Holyfield's power at bay most of the evening. At the end of the night, it was Ruiz retaining his
title, but not winning any believers in the process.
So what ever happened to our heavyweight division? After the fall of Mike Tyson, there has not been one heavyweight that has caught the
public's imagination. For now, I will sit here and watch tapes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano and ponder,"WHERE DID THE
GREAT HEAVYWEIGHTS GO?!"
